Spam - is there a way to cut it down???

Options
Hi,
I wonder if it is at all possible to reduce number of Spam emails? I am getting probably around 100 a day - all of them about Viagra, replica watches, online pharmacy etc… I never click on them and delete straight from my SPAM folder, but is there any way of stopping them coming? I know blocking emails wont help as they are sent from diff emails every day, I have my email published on the net so I guess that’s where its coming from, - and I will change that, but is there any other way??
Thanks

Only one way to actually literally reduce the amount of spam, get a new address. Otherwise it's just going to be different methods of filtering or deleting directly from the server (there are various tools and I'm sure someone will recommend one shortly, I don't filter my emails so I don't use them).

Get different addresses for different purposes, even just one for personal and one for work/public. At the extreme end I've got about 350 because I give each company a unique address. If you want to be contactable online then maybe it's worth having a single gmail account just for that or better yet (if possible, you don't say how or why it's published) use a contact form page instead of an email address.

If you have POP or IMAP access to your account, you can create a new email account with gmx.com, then get your new email address to collect email from your old address. Because GMX have spam-filter built-in, this should stop most of the junk.

Alternatively, Spamihilator works very well with Outlook:

To reduce the amount of spam you get from companies passing on your address, you could try Spam Gourmet. It creates "disposable" email addresses for you on the fly. You give someone your temporary email address, and emails sent to that address are forwarded on to you. Once you have received a certain number of emails (a number you specify), the address stops working. It's great when you want to sign up for a website as a one-off.

    Hope this helps...

    Not much use now but in future;
On the text of web page insert *spam* into the middle of the address, like this
    myadddy*spam*@aol.com
any page scanners will pick up an invalid address and underneath advise users to remove that part
If you create an email address including the duff part it can be used to track down repeated spam IP addresses etc

Was going to mention that when I started talking about contact forms but forgot. Many also remove the "@" as that's the first thing that attracts the bots. Like myaddysplataol.com and give a line of instruction (replace the "splat" with "@"). It does require the user to manually input the address instead of clicking on it but only real solution to publish an address without it getting extracted for spam.

I have found a website which has been going since 1998 specifically to help erradicate spam mail. Basically, you can use the online form or forward the spam email to an address they give you and this is added to a list - it does get very technical how they actually work these things out (it's all on the site) but the good thing is that you can get a 'block' list from them to automatically add in your email client to ensure these emails stop; also regularly updated.

I've only been with them for about a month, and as I don't get that many spam emails, I can't say whether they work or not, but I know I haven't had any spam from them!

You can find more info from spamcop. It's a dot net address - new member so can't put links :)

er, and no. I don't work for them. hehe

I had a gmail account for about 12 months when it started getting an awful lot of spam mail, I opened a live account and use it almost daily and have had very little if any spam in the last 2 years.

I use Mailwasher (http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/page2.html#Mailwasher). It doesn't stop spam but it does stop it from getting into your inbox and it works with most email programs.
