Answer should be 2. A Violin

Directed by the Golden Globe® winner Joe Wright, THE SOLOIST follows the story of journalist Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.) as he discovers Nathaniel Anthony Ayers (Oscar® winner Jamie Foxx), a former classical music prodigy, playing his violin on the streets of L.A. As Lopez endeavors to help the homeless man find his way back, a unique friendship is formed, one that transforms both their lives.

I think its a Cello, as thats what he is playing on the front cover of the DVD.

The competition text may say violin but certainly IMDB says that they used a famous CELLIST to play the music... and it would be a bit odd using a picture of him playing a cello if it really was a violin...

Checking out the trailer it does show a couple of very brief glimpses of him playing a violin (a 2 stringed violin is mentioned in the synopsis), but mostly he is shown playing the cello. Hope that confuses things even more

I've just read 3 different reviews of the film and 1 of the book and they all say that he's playing the Violin on the streets. Maybe he takes up the Cello once he's taken in?

I would go with Cello myself, as thats what he is playing on the DVD cover.

According to his Wiki page here he played both, so either answer should be accepted.

Starts with the Violin on the streets - then is given a cello

The Soloist is based on the true story of Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx), a musical prodigy who develops schizophrenia during his second year at Juilliard School. Ayers becomes homeless and plays a two-stringed violin in the streets of downtown Los Angeles. One day Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.), a LA Times Columnist, meets Nathanial and decides to write a newspaper column for the Los Angeles Times about Nathaniel Ayers about how he is homeless. An old woman takes sympathy and sends Steve a cello for Nathaniel to play. In attempting to help Ayers, Lopez is forced to grapple personally with the complex issues and frustrations surrounding the thousands of mentally ill who are homeless on the streets of L.A.
