Well as you can guess from my siggie Im on a tight budget due to debts.
I also enjoy doing things the OS way but Im also trying to loose weight by following the Slimming world 'red' plan. A co-worker goes to classes so Im using her books etc but I wondered if anyone here follows this plan and a budget and cooking the os way?
Any menu ideas would be fantactic.

Hi Pixie,
I did slimming world years ago and to be honest following that diet for a few months got me on the way to cooking meals from scratch instead of buying ready meals/processed food - lots of sins lol
I should imagine slimming world would be quite easy to follow as it involves cooking from scratch using fresh and store cupboard ingredients. You could bulk make some of the recipes you like and freeze them. Red days might be more expensive as they are based around meat and protein, correct me if I'm wrong it's been a while. Green days may work out cheaper. I used to find the green days more filling too as you could have huge portions of pasta and potatoes whilst using only a small portion of meat as a healthy extra if you wanted to. I used to make loads of no sin curry sauces and pasta sauces with huge portion of pasta. I found I lost weight quicker on the green days than the red and never felt that hungry. My friend did red days though and got to where she wanted to be. I went on holiday and pigged out and stopped going..................
You could trying batch making home made soups and freezing the portions too. Hope this helps. I haven't got my books anymore. I wish I'd kept them as slimming world would be easy to do now I'm cooking from scratch all the time!!! May have a lok on e-bay and see whats about.

I am currently following slimming world but follow the green day which I find is much cheaper.
Red day is mainly meat so you need to source out a good meat supplier check out the prices at your local butchers and farm shops if you can get to them. I would also compare supermarket prices to find the cheapest. A lot will fall down to if you have a preference regarding the quality of the meat.
Fruit and veg is also important. If you can get to a lidl they often have veg (and I think fruit) half price. I often use my local market just before they pack up as you can often get a bargain.
I find the best thing to do is make a list of meals that I can have and like (often make a note of what Healthy extras and syns they contain). With this list I make a rough meal plan then I know what I will be actually needing.
If you actually go to the supermarket (rather than online shopping) check see if they do online shopping then you can use this to make your list and thus checking the offers in any slimming world books you have. If you don't have a directory I would seriously consider getting one. They are £6.95 in class so if your co-worker could pick one up for you it would work out cheaper than ebay. I am always using mine to check offers.
Anyway hope my rambling helps!0 -

Thanks Em, I need to work out some sin free sauces like curry, chilli and one for pasta. Bulk cooking sounds like the way to tackle this, i do this a little right now but not all of the time. Ive never made soup as I only like tomatoe so i doubt i could make a sin free version of that. I will have to shop around for cheap cuts of meat i think as I dont get on well with the green days. I just hope it works for me
Thanks again and if you want me to copy any of the books etc just pm me

Shopping on line with the directory at hand sounds like fantastic advice! Also I have an aldi by me so i will check out their fruit section tomorrow.
Thanks so much

Lok at green options, it is a heck of a lot cheaper to base meals on lentils/pulses/jacket spuds etc than lean meat, and I found it a lot more satisfying too.0
-
for a free pasta sauces (green day - although can be altered for red day) I use passata (or a tin of chopped tomatoes), herbs, garlic, onion, sometimes some frozen mixed veg, then if I want a meaty one I add some mince or quorn mince. You can also add lentils/pulses/pearl barley.
The directory is great - it even has aldi and lidl in as well as the other supermarkets.0 -
Are quorn mince and quorn pieces free on green days? I find with this stuff once you've cooked it up with your herbs and spices and sauces, you can't tell the difference. You may be able to pick it up a bit cheaper at a discount freezer shop too. Could be an option make up loads of batches of quorn spag bol, quorn curry and freeze the portions that kind of thing and then you could follow the green plan which would work out cheaper. I think with the red days you have to use the lean/extra lean cuts of meat, which are I find are more expensive than other cuts. Pixie, I'm sure you could make a syn-free tomato soup though.
Fry some onions and garlic if you like it in spray oil, add a splash of stock if it sticks and then add tinned chopped tomatoes or passata. Red peppers are great in this too. Add more stock if it looks too thick. Cook for about 20-30 mins so that the flavours amalgamate. Then blitz in a food processor or blender. I like smoked paprika in this kind of soup -big on flavour but no cals/syns/points/fat
Other tasty veg you could use are carrots, mushrooms, courgettes and asparagus.0 -
Why couldn't you make a syn free tomato soup? I use passata and onion and garlic, soften in some frylight first and add herbs and if you are on a green day then bung in some pasta. Yummy. I prefer green days as I like to eat lots of rice and pasta and syn free chips with egg and baked beans (sleurp)_but I like my bacon on weekends so go red then. I do find sometimes that I can either eat well and cheaply or I can lose weight, I do somehow struggle to do both and I really don't know why.
Ooops we cross posted! Great minds and all that0
