Any advice about reliable, cheap Sat Nav outfits covering Uk and Ireland?

Comments

  • Try searching MSE for "satnav" (all one word) and there's a few deals around at the moment. I've got a Garmin Nuvi 360 and love it. Just toured the Dordogne using it and didn't row with my wife once! I think the Nuvi 300 and 310 cover just the UK and Ireland. They are a bit pricy by today's standards though but I shortlisted this and the TomTom One when I researched them a month ago.

There's loads to choose from so somebody will be along in a moment to advise you!
  • Ive got a tom tom sat nav, not the cheapest, or the most expensive on the market. But a piece of cake to use, good with directions and very rarely get lost with it.

Always remember to download software upgrades as roads do change, and mine doesnt have the new A1(M) downloaded so thinks im in a field near the leeds bypass........

Great bit of kit, much better than reading a map at the wheel.......:D
  • For the money, I think the new TomTom One V2 GB is a bargain and it covers republic of ireland :)
  • One word of warning - if you need European maps (or at least you think you might want them in the future) choose a SatNav that includes them now. The maps tend to cost disproportionately more if you decide to buy them seperately later and you may also find some low end models don't have the capacity to hold the European and UK/Ireland maps all at once.
  • The Tom tom one new edition has an sd card for storage of the maps which is a good idea as you can back it up to another sd card just incase anything goes wrong? Well thats what Ive done anyway. You can also connect it via bluetooth to your mobile phone easily. As regards extra maps I'm hoping that if I do need them one day that I can transfer it all to a larger sd card? Not sure about this but I can't see why not. The previous tomtom one had 128 card in it and this has a 256. It does all I need it to and with the phone connected I can download traffic updates-speed cameras etc etc etc. I got mine halfords online for £187.99
Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults
  • Also I think Destinator has ROI maps.

Reliable and cheap? Hmm, see my signature below! Beware of buying on price alone is the message.

I've seen from newspaper adverts / Halfords literature that there's a Garmin C510D Deluxe on offer for £199-99 which apparently includes both UK and European mapping as well as 'for life' live traffic information and pre-downloaded safety camera information.

Does anyone know if this would be a better buy than the TomTom GB new version that's also on offer for £199-99?

Is Garmin better than TomTom, or vice versa?

The above features would be very useful to me, but would also appreciate hands-free mobile phone facility (Bluetooth) as well if this is possible......for the same price!

And after all this..........is Halfords necessarily the best place to get your satnav?

After all, they do include 'free set-up and demo'

But........if you're not happy with your purchase satnavs ARE EXCLUDED FROM THEIR 28 DAY SATISFACTION GUARANTEE so you can't take it back (unless it's faulty of course!)

Many thanks in advance to you all for your help!
  • the Garmin 310 Deluxe can be had for £223 online. It way out-trumps those two. Brand new Version 9 mapping software too and free speed camera alerts. Garmin customer services are very good by today's standards too.
