One lucky Marie Claire reader will win a luxurious makeover and photography experience, worth £5,000.

To celebrate the release of Dorian Gray, we're giving one lucky reader the chance to win a luxurious makeover and photography experience, worth £5,000, courtesy of Sapphire Studios. You will take home your very own photo portrait, capturing your eternal youth and beauty just like Dorian Gray.

In which of the following films did Colin Firth NOT appear?

I have searched URL, Dorian Gray & Sapphire Studios. Apologies if I have missed anything. :o

I got called today and the over friendly woman was going on and on about how lucky i was to have "won" this and that i was only one of five winners.

She went into her whole prize breakdown until I butted in and asked so how much do I need to pay for the photos?

She didnt tell me (of course) but went into a speel about sadly theyre not free but we have different packages to suit your budget etc etc.

Im not interested. You have to pay lots for the images (she mentioned packages to suit your budget).

If you want a free make-over and images ask a photographer and MUA to work TFP (time for prints) with you. They get to use the images for their portfolios and you get free prints. I'm a model and can answer any questions on this as i do it often when I need new prints.

On the competition page its states "Even if you're not the lucky winner, you can still get a free makeover and photography session by simply visiting www.sapphirestudios.co.uk/doriangray. "
If you click on this link it takes you to a page offering the following -
"Retain youth and beauty just like Dorian Gray, with a Free makeover experience with Sapphire Studios. Simply enter your details below and we'll contact you to arrange your free makeover."

This is obviously a marketing tactic and not related to the competition prize. If however, you completed the form that would provide an explanation for the phonecall you received today.

I think it highly unlikely that IPC - a large media group - would run a scam like the one you suggest. Also if the one winner of this competition (which does not close until the 25th September) was responsible for paying for the photographs IPC would be legally obliged to state this in the competition text or terms and conditions.
If you still think the competition is a scam I suggest you contact Marie Claire, the Institute of Sales Promotions (complaints@isp.org.uk) or the Advertising Standards Authority who have an online complaints form.
    Hope this helps :)

The studio called said I'd won the competition that Id entered in Marie Claire and was all congratulations. She said I was one of 5 winners out of hundreds and I must be over the moon etc. I have no idea why she said this either as I was aware there was only one winner too.

It all felt a bit odd especially as I only entered this lat night. Even more so when I asked about the price of the photos so I thought I should post.

Its not a scam as such as you can say no like I did and you're not losing anything at all, but it was just an odd phone call and a half! I certainly didnt feel like Id "won" anything after that. More like an invite to come and have my make-up done for free and pay for pics. Something I can get done free almost anytime.

Have a look at this thread where people have had similar experiences this afternoon - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1922377

    Just a heads up.

Yes this is what I filled in (as it wasnt your thread I got the info from it was another one) but what Im getting at is why are they telling me Ive won this competition when I blatently have not?

She directly stated "you won the competition from filling in your detials in Marie Claire or Style magazine!", congrats, you must be in shock!.. etc etc. Really OTT....... when I didnt even enter the competition!!!!!

All it said on the page was: Retain youth and beauty just like Dorian Gray, with a Free makeover experience with Sapphire Studios. Simply enter your details below and we'll contact you to arrange your free makeover. - This is not a competition.........

All I'm saying is beware. IPC are obv ok but the studio themselves seemed not to be. From my experience and the others, I dont want anything to do with them 100% free or not now. Why would you tell someone they've won a competition when they've not and act totally false?

    Anyway thanks for listening.
  • Hi there,

I was interested to read your threads. I've been looking on the internet for feedback on things like this as I recently almost fell victim to a makeover/photo package scam with a company called New ID Studios which has bases in most of the major UK cities.

I was approached by a woman in central London offering me a package which included a haircut, make-up and photo session with a chance to claim a free photo at the end of it. The day itself was nice, until we were ushered into a viewing room and subjected to some severely pushy sales as they tried to get us to buy photos amounting to £800! We refused, and decided we didn't even want the free photo as it's not really free - you need to pay £10 to have it digitally retouched (when we suggested that it didn't need retouching as we looked quite nice already, the "viewer" snorted in amusement), and then £5 postal fee. We walked out of the salon, having not handed over any money, and not signed anything.

As per the terms & conditions, I expected to receive the £50 deposit that I paid back within 10 working days. When I didn't get it, I rang the New ID Studios explaining the situation. They claimed that I had ordered a CD worth £75 so they had taken the £50 deposit. When I asked when the extra £25 was coming out, they said I had already paid it, IN CASH on the day. I immediately thought, "Uh oh, this sounds like serous scam territory". I demanded that they send me a copy of the paperwork which showed that I had ordered the CD. This took about a day and a half of constant phoning and being kept on hold before they finally sent it over.

When the paperwork arrived, the signature on the form was nothing like mine and half of the form hadn't even been filled in. I immediately scanned my driving license and passport and sent the pictures over to them to show that my signature on them was completely different to the one on the form. It was only then, that they agreed that a mistake had been made.

They explained that someone with the same first name had accidentally signed my form (yeah right!). I don't know about you guys, but that sounds like a TOTAL SCAM!

Anyway, they will hopefully be paying the money back (this all happened today so I hope I haven't spoken too soon) in the next few days, but the whole thing has left me with a sour taste in my mouth.

Just thought I'd share my experience so that anyone else out there who has suffered the same knows that whatever these makeover photo packages might promise, they are only out for one thing, your money, and you really need to be on your toes.

Read ALL the small print and don't pay for anything on your debit card. Use a credit card as if they try and take any money off you, your bank can stop it without cancelling the card.
