While my kitchen was being refitted, I used my rice cooker for lots of things, including sort of stir frying (it kept flicking over to 'keep warm' because it was reaching temp very quickly) I use it regularly to cook veggies, spag bol etc. Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

may seem a silly question I know. But I have seen on my travels various 2/3 tier steamers . What type of things are cooked in these? vegetables and rice for instance? can you do other things with it? As you can see I havent a clue but any info woud be great. Also if I do buy one is their an advantage with 2 or 3 tiered ones ?0

I have a Tefal 3 tier one which can do veg, meat, fish, eggs, puddings & rice although the only thing i use it for is veg as i prefer grilled meat & i dont like fish & i always cook my rice in a pan with double the volume of stock.
It's really easy to use & the veg is beautiful cooked that way, my 3 year old will even eat brocolli!!!!Madison's mum

thanks. does it take a lot longer than boiling veg. for instance potatoes, carrots etc?0

I think it cooks quicker - I put carrots and swede on the bottom layer and start them off for 10 minutes, then put the second layer on with potatoes in for another 20 minutes and then add green veg and steam for another 10 minutes. It is far less messy too - you just rinse it all out after cooking. I have a Tefal Vitamin plus three tier steamer which I got on Amazon for half price and I love it. I also steam puddings in it sometimes and also chicken fillets, but I haven't done fish because I am afraid that it might make it smelly, being plastic and I think I mightn't get the smell out.mrs_baggins wrote:thanks. does it take a lot longer than boiling veg. for instance potatoes, carrots etc?Jane

I use my slow cooker with a light timer so that the meal is ready when we get home from work, but I suppose I could do the same with my steamer, so in theory the casserole etc. could be ready along with the veg. You're only young once, but you can be immature forever

You can also buy a 'rice cooker', these are really good for idiots like me who always manage to make rice stick. You can also leave it in the cooker for a while without it going glooping... you just add the correct quantity of rice and of water, and it does it all for you. amazing!
