HELP - hdd knackered

It doesnt rain, it bloody pours doesnt it
My master hdd has gone south and all i can hear is the arm hunting over the disc
wont boot up......took cover off and powered it up...the arm just swings about hunting over the disc
there is some important files i need from it....YEs, i know i should have backed it up
Is there ANY way the folder can be retrieved?

I work in IT support. You'd be suprised at how many of our external staff blame our department for their HDD breaking!!
Unfortunately if its as bad as your making out there is no way to get the folder back. Not without some serious tools similar to what the police would use to recover info from a wiped HDD.
Afraid you need to learn a lesson from this and keep an up to date backup in future.This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.0 -
How important are these files?
As in, data recovery will cost ~£750-£1000.0 -
You've taken the cover off? OH.DEAR. There is literally microns between the read heads and the platters. A miniscule spec of dust can completely stuff the whole job up which is why they should only be opened in a clean room.
There are some recovery companies that'll take out the platters and read off them but they're few and far between and not cheap. Any company charging under £400 per 20GB is not going to be doing this and will probably just either use software (which won't work in your case) or swap logic boards over which again is probably not likely to work.0
