Pc keeps restarting...

Hello,
Boyfs computer keeps on restarting itself. He gets onto the safe mode option screen, starts it in safe mode then it just keeps on restarting itself. It shows the Windows Xp screen then starts itself again. He left it on through the night the other day and he thinks thats the problem. I am leaning towards the idea of a virus or worse a worm/malware.
Any ideas people?
Cheers
He said he put a new antivirus program onto it but he didn't say which one.

could be a loose piece of hardware or it may be overheating due to a dodgy fan..
i had a similar problem which was a dodgy fan. took it into an expert, didnt cost much.0 -
Does it say windows is shutting down, or does it just reboot?
Do you have the windows XP disk.
Is there any data on it that you need?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Its a new tower though it's only around 12months old if that. Bought it brand new. He had left it on at night a few times. Would you reccommend just leaving it off for a few days? It is used almost every night aswell which can't help, I d wouldn't say so much as to burn it out though!?
It doesn't say it's shutting down it just goes from the loading XP screen then flips back to rebooting itself. He does have the disc he said it does nothing, but I had the same problem with a couple of other really old comps and it worked and I had to go through the restart rigmarole
There are photos and documents on it, the photos more than anything of our daughter, some we can't get more of. A back up of files comes to mind a bit too late0
