NAS External Hard Drive

Hi,
Apologies that this may seem obvious but I need to get comfortable with this first.
I'm interested in purchasing a NAS External Hard Drive (Buffalo HD-H250LAN to be precise) to complete my home network and enable print sharing.
I currently have a desktop connected to a Wireless Router (Dell 2350) via a LAN port and the Laptop connects to this wirelessly. I can view files on each other's computer as I've enabled sharing and also connect to the internet via Broadband.
If I add this NAS drive, is is simple as connecting it via the Wireless Router using one of the free LAN ports and I should be able to see the new drive?
Also, would the drive be visible on the wireless network to other external users? If so, how would I go about securing it and only be seen by my laptop?
Many thanks in advance,
Tesh

One way is to set up rules in your router's firewall to block all outgoing packet types from all ports to the destination IP address of the NAS from each IP address source on your network that you do not wish to allow access.

Alternatively, if I security enable my router using a WEP key, will this stop other people seeing the new drive?0 -
Ah, sorry I thought you meant you wanted to make the NAS private from other authorised users on your LAN.
Didn't realise until I reread your post that you have an unsecured wireless network between your laptop and router (at least that's the inference when you ask, "if I security enable my router using a WEP key").
You should encrypt your wireless network NOW; don't wait until you've got the NAS. Without encryption your laptop, PC and unauthorised use of your internet connection are wide open. Secure it asap preferably with WPA if your router supports it, if not use WEP.

hi i have brought this 500g nas, its a bit slow ?! any 1 else here agree? quick google has many people saying the same.
anyway , i need help in adding my usb laser printer to my home network. in Vista , i can see on the linkstation interface (http://192.168.2.126/cgi-bin/top.cgi--as a web page ) that the USB printer is there - showing the correct name etc BUT i keep getting this ' no right to perform this task' or something similar when i add the printer . i am trying to add in this location - " network/linkstation/printer" , i have also tried the same with my other xp machine - where it offered to log on as a diff user , tried all the users etc but no joy....
i then tried adding the printer in control panel , even adding by location like - \\linkstation\printer name , no joy ...then i googled and someone said use adding the printer as LOCAL , rather than network....i could actually see 'linkstation' as 1 of the port and used the cd ...still no joy ??!?!
any1 with any ideas apart from hitting the thing with a hammer :mad:0 -
You've replied to a four-year old thread - why not start your own new thread?
You don't give many clues when you say "i have brought this 500g nas, its a bit slow ?! any 1 else here agree?".
Make? Model? How connected?
Your USB laser printer will be connected to one of your PCs - I can't make out which from what you say. You need to have File and Printer Sharing turned on on that PC (if it isn't already) AND actually share that printer on that PC so that other PCs can see it...0
