Green potatoes

I bought a small pack of charlotte potatoes from asda but when put out to chit last month they quickly turned green. None of my proper seed spuds did this. Are they ok to plant out

Hi, they may have been sprayed with some sort of growth retardant to stop them sprouting, a lot of non-organic ones are. (were they organic? in which case I don't know :o )

  • Thanks nodwah. I don't think they could have been sprayed with retardent cos they have sprouted ok. It's just the strong green colour that is the problem.

Were they sold as seed potatoes, or did you just buy some ordinary culinary spuds and try to sprout them?
  • According to an article I read on t'internet, ALL potatoes are poisonous and green potatoes indicate a concentration of toxins already present.

I've never looked at a spud in the same way since!
  • I always thought that green potatoes are poisonous?

Since you want to grow them the green doesn't matter - it's only for eating. When you pull your spuds at the end of the growing season you'll see the original spud all disgusting looking but the new tubers are perfect.

I've never had seed potatoes go green while chitting. Are you sure they're seed potatoes?

If you use uncertified shop potatoes to grow them on, you may save money but you may also introduce diseases into your plot which are hard to get rid of. Clearly its a question of balancing the cost saving and the risks.
