reminder about the punative size limits on overseas packages

I've been caught out twice with this one - the RM must be getting quite tough about checking parcels for the size limits allowed for overseas mail, the measurement of the length, width and depth added together can be no more than 900 mm, with the longest side being no more than 600 mm.

The trouble is the PO staff don't check the measurements of the parcels when they accept them (I think that they assume that I know what I'm doing :o, but I've forgotten about this twice now) and 2 or 3 days later the parcel comes boomeranging back to me marked as 'OVERSIZED', the postage is already paid on the parcel so you either have to go through a real bother on the phone to get them to send you a cheque to replace this or you have to cut the box down at the flaps to get it to the correct size and keep the sticker on - I wrote on the box that it was now the correct size - or try to peel the sticker off and put it on a new box.

The size of the box that they are rejecting is really not large at all, only just around 1 foot square so be warned!!!

OH dear AT, I'm amazed though that a parcel can be accepted only to be rejected later, the Post office really seems to be in some confusion now.

I suppose that is the advantage of my local PO, they are so very strict that nothing gets past them, I once saw them argue with someone about some loose paper at the end of a package that they claimed made the parcel oversized, yet the sender claimed was still perfectly oK,. that was definitely tape measures at dawn!

Unfortunately I was forced to take my books there today ( a little flurry of sales on Amazon, hurrah!) and had one refused that I know was a letter not a package, but paid up just to get the things posted.

Good old fashioned technology at work. My Local PO has a rather frightening looking wooden rule behind the counter!
