iPod/Nano/Shuffle - Standalone Tip (no iTunes!)

I'm very much one for not needing 3rd party software for an mp3 player. Especially iTunes which (in a Windows environment) I'm not very keen on. It just means in order to change anything you need to have iTunes installed. Bit of a pain if it's not your computer, or are restricted from installing iTunes (maybe at work or school)

Anyway thought I'd share this. I came across a portable version of Winamp, Portable Winamp that someone has created. You literally store Winamp in a directory on your iPod, and can then using the ml_ipod plug, just copy music to and from your iPod using Winamp.

It basically means you can plug your iPod into any computer (with or without iTunes) and still update your music easily.

For any other portable stuff, such as Firefox etc... this is a good site:
http://portableapps.com/ Just means you can carry all you need in your pocket.

Here's another interesting topic too:
http://www.u3.com/ which shows the future of usb devices and how to make your files/settings/etc... portable to any computer with ease.

Great info wolfman. Would work great with my portable TrueCrypt as well to store sensitive stuff.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

Yeah I use an equivalent, YadaDisk that was mentioned the other day actually. Means if I lose it everything's nicely encrypted. It's great being able to carry everything around with me.

Also for the Shuffle there's an even more simple app.
    http://shuffle-db.sourceforge.net/
It's a 12kb console app! You drag 'n' drop the mp3's you want onto the Shuffle (via Windows Explorer), then just run the app, done. And the mp3's can be named as you want, they don't get renamed like with iTunes.

That's currently what I have and use, but from playing around with Winamp on my friends Nano, I'm tempted to get a Nano or iPod again.

Wolfman, just got a shuffle and want to try the above. The only problem I see is that you must have python installed on each machine!

There's an executable (for Windows) and a python script (for Linux). Both should be on the site, if not I've got the executable if you need it.

Yeah, thanks. Had a look and the executable is old and no longer supported. I have tried the python version and it is great. I now need to work out how to use this when I need it and iTunes when I want to dump a playlist on.
