  • i signed up for the first 8 modules which would give me a "bathroom fitter" qualification and it was £4850. the whole sherbang was about 10K but if you pay upfront they give you a grand discount.

What are you not sure about ??
Have you checked with any local plumbers what they think & whether they might offer work/placement while you train ??

I think lot of time served plumbers may be a bit negative but hopefully you should find a few who may help.

  • I spoken to few and its still 50/50 some say experience is better but then you still need the qualification for plumbing now unlike other trades - tiling and plastering where it is mostly about experience just unsure as it is alot of money to get trained up and not to be accepted by a plumber and it would be too early to go alone

  • You're job prospects are too narrow, the plumbing course doesnt start and end at being a self employed plumber. There are thousands of different jobs out there, in the gas/heating/sanitation/construction fields to list but a few.
The course is designed to help you figure out what you want to do and how to achieve it.
If you stop after the first 8 mods and become a bathroom fitter, then fine...but think big and keep your options open.

I think all the negative comments from existing plumbers are to cover their backs. they tend not to take on plumbers mates as they only tend to hand around for a couple of years and then start their own businesses, which is competion.

If you;re on the outiside looking in, you'll need to start somewhere. Whether its a FT course or self study, you'll need to be trained in some capacity...and if you cant get trained you cant start, and if you cant start, you wont get into the trade.

How old are you & what made you want to change from Web Developer to Plumber ??

Would have thought Web Developer was a good career at moment.

Whether you do a course privately or by evening courses at a local college, your problem is always going to be getting a job or work placement which will enable you to work on site and be assessed for your NVQ. Of course, local plumbers have no incentive to help you with this as the more plumbers there are, the less they themselves will be able to charge. (Sorry to be cynical but it's true.) Unless you have connections (friends or family) in the construction trades who would be able to help with work experience, I would be very careful about putting a great deal of money into one of these courses. At least a basic college course won't cost you the earth and may even be free depending upon your circumstances. It would also enable you to assess whether you have an aptitude for this kind of work before investing more time and money in training.
