Thanks

When I was a child our Siamese cat would only eat Glenryck pilchards in tomato sauce. When he died my mum made the tins of them that were left in the cupboard into fishcakes. She said it was an old wartime recipe

  • I love tinned fish :)

I use them with jacket potatoes, mixed in rice with veg, mixed through cous cous or pasta.

    Delicious.

Like the idea of mixing it with rice. Simple!
The fishcakes sound like a good one too!

    I make Pilchards with Pasta.

If you like tuna pasta, then you will probably be okay with this although it's stronger in taste.

I weigh and cook 50g wholemeal pasta and when it's ready I drain off the water, add 1-2 tsp green pesto sauce (v cheap from Home Bargains), abt 75-100g pilchards (depending on can size!), quarter can chopped tomatoes, stir all through together and serve topped with a sprinkle of parmesan (or any other cheese you like). Of course you could use tuna instead of pilchards and you could also have salad with it.

I find this quick, cheap, healthy and very tasty! If I'm feeling lazy I speed it up even more I just use a whole can of pilchards (abt 155g?) and forget the tomatoes although this is quite strong flavoured so it depends on how much you love pilchards! I don't usually need to have anything else until teatime when I've had this for lunch!

    Enjoy!

I usually just take the lid off and add a fork. :o
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

I recently bought a tin of these, we ended up having them on toast with cheese sprinkled on top. My original plan for them was to make a scone pizza. I vaguely remembered Delia doing something similar on Swapshop (about 30 years ago ;) ). What I planned was to make a scone mixture and spread mashed sardines in tom sauce over the dough, sprinkle with cheese and bake. I'll try it one day.
  • We love them on toast. As a student, we had pilchard curry, but I really cant recommend that _pale_

A recent thread has other ideas - love the mini stargazy pie ;) - Pilchards and sardines.

Thanks Penny - I didn't realise there was another thread.
Perhaps if one of the BG's would kindly combine this post to the other!

Pasta bake sounds nice to do!
    Thanks everyone!

It sounds silly now but I've always been too scared to eat them - I mean, they're WHOLE fish! It seems odd!?

My dad LOVES them on toast with peanut butter (of all things!) he says it tastes just like crab!
