Savoury pie ideas please

i managed to pick up a breville pie maker machine brand new in the box still in plastic/cardboard etc for only £6 from the car boot sale they aren't made any more and the postage alone for them on ebay was at least £6 plus they were selling for about £23 on top of that!

anyhow, dh is doing a MSC in developmental linguistics at edinburgh uni and practically lives in the dept. their common room has a fridge, plates, mugs cutlery and a microwave so i bought the piemaker so i could make him pies he could just reheat in the microwave so he could have an inexpensive and quick hot meal

there are the obvious choices of steak pie and mince pie but i was wondering what else you lovely and highly creative folks could come up with for me to make... the other pie thread has given me some ideas for the sweet pies but i really need him to eat what i'd refer to as 'real food' and he needs it for brain power so please, divulge your amazing ideas :p

Our pies are veg (often leftover) in a cheese sauce or a pastie pie. That's the same as our cheese and onion pasties - diced potato, onion, carrot and grated cheese. Not much variety, I guess!
  • use tomato puree, cheese, garlic, onions and peppers with left over chicken or ham. makes a pie close to a calzone pizza. add basil or oregano if you like that. basically use up any leftovers.

Absolutely anything, can go in a pie.

I had one of these, and it was great for lunches. I used it until the family outgrew the machine, ew havve 7 children now.

Anyhoo, whatever we had for dinner, went in teh pies maker at teh end of the day:

    curry
    egg, bacon, tomatoes
    bolognese
    chilli
    lamb hotpot
    cheese and potato
    egg and cheese
    leftover roast

and tehn there were sweet leftovers:

    fruit (obviously)
    custard (just add nutmeg)
    oaty caramelly type things.

Anyhoo, it pdoesn't really matter, just bung anything in.

The only thing to remember is to fill it well, otherwise you get a layer of air when biting into it,

Good luck, and try not to eat too many or we'll all be singing ' Who Ate all The Pies?'
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

    cheat!!!! :D

Buy a can of Campbells chicken and white wine soup, mix with some chopped chicken and add a splosh of milk.

I won't go back to making white sauce for chicken pies since I tasted this.
Just run, run and keep on running!

i'll have to find a lower fat way of making the crusts :D

actually i will probably do them with a mix of white flour, wheat germ and porridge oats (we'll see how that works) i always make my bread with these and it makes them tastier and healthier!

Leftover roast dinner makes a very nice pie - fry off a chopped onion and add diced, cooked chicken, leftover stuffing, leftover veg. Cook for a couple of minutes and then add leftover gravy. If you haven't got anything left over except the cooked chicken, then just add frozen peas straight from the freezer to the chicken and onion mix, crumble an oxo cube over the top and add a bit of water - reduce down until you have a thickish sauce. If you don't like gravy then use a white or cheese sauce instead. This also works well with any ham you may have lurking in the fridge.
This would work with any sort of leftover roast, or, if you're a veggie, then cheese and onion or cheese and broccoli (or cheese and any mixed veg really) work very well.
You can also make a very nice pie by frying a few sliced leeks, adding in some chopped bacon and topping with a cheese sauce - yum (yes, I know, not veggie).
Or you could fry a couple of onions in some butter, add a small head of chopped celery, 4oz chopped walnuts, 4 chopped dried apricots, one and a half cups of fresh breadcrumbs (you need to judge how moist or dry you want the mixture to be) and a handful of chopped parsley. Give the resultant mix a quick zhoozh in the food processor to amalgamate it a bit and chop up the celery into a sort of coarse pate. This mixture can be cooked in the oven as is to make a sort of meatloaf without the meat (I use it as a fabby stuffing for turkey, but we always end up eating it on its own), or you can moisten it with a little gravy made with Marigold veg stock and use it as a pie filling.
Happy pie making - I'm quite hungry now!

i've got a tin of cream of celery soup lurking in the cupboard so i may use this mixed in with some veg and some tuna

i also though i could possibly use up the remaining cup of soup mixes by making them with less water so they are thick like gravy. then i could put in some potato (or use regular strenght soup to make mash with the potatoe) and/or some unseasonsed meat, so that it doesn't taste too salty

  • Yes, soup is a great pie filler - I mean the Campbells condensed sort, of course. Asparagus, for example - just add some chicken leftovers for chick and asp pie* :) - go and have a look, see what flavours are stocked locally to you and think what you can add to them to make delicious fillings.

*Just to warn you, I didn't like the last one of these I made because to my HORROR they have started adding msg to their asparagus soup. Yuk yuk yuk - so check the ingredients if, like me, you are allergic to msg. They do make other soups which are free from the horrid stuff!
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).

i'm definately going to have to make pies tomorrow, you're all making me so hungry with your tasty ideas!

i kinda figured that i'd use leftovers in some of the pies, it's the logical thing to do.

however i think that i may have some marathon pie making sessions that will be the closest i ever come to once a month cooking... i was told by someone from Frugal Genius UK that if you undercook them a bit you can open freeze them then put them in a freezer bag and finish them off in the pie maker again! that would be great for nights when i've been dragged from pillar to post all over edinburgh (i am self employed and one of my many jobs is auditing and merchandising so i cover a lot of ground some days) the pies i make for dh can be kept in the fridge for a few days or i could finish browning the crust in the piemaker (from frozen) then put them in his lunch for him to gently reheat later

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm if if weren't so late i'd go make some now!
