Uk Vista buyers overcharged - Petition

...from pcw.co.uk

"There is a huge difference in the price that people in the US and the UK are paying for Windows Vista the new Microsoft Operating System.

As an example of this, in the UK a full copy of Vista Ultimate would cost you £350, in the US it would cost you £195. The US version of Vista is exactly the same as the UK version."

..another example of ripoff prices here compared to USA, signing a petition - will it help?

  • Will it help - probably not. :-(

I know we pay a lot more sales tax (17.5% vs. 0%..6%) and business rates are higher here (due to land being more expensive)...

So what? There are variations in the prices of goods between most countries. Just because the US gets an item at a certain price, that does not automatically bestow on us the right to have it at the same or a comparable price. If it bothers you that much then don't buy the product.

    Do I understand this correctly?

Somebody has set up a petition to ask the British Government to do something about the amount charged for some piece of software manufactured by an American Corporation?

Who believes, compared with the war in Iraq, say, that a government would be concerned by such relative trivialities?

    Surreal! Unbelievable!

  • £350.....That will teach you not to shop at PC world.

It is also why google was invented ;)

Amazon £124.99, 32 bit version Link
    Overclockers £123.36 64 bit version Link .

But I wouldn't buy the 64 bit version just yet, as parts may have to be disabled if they lose anymore copyright and anti-trust lawsuits.

    :D
  • Why the Downing Street petition? If you don't want to pay £350 for Vista, do some Googling and find a cheaper retailer, or even better, don't buy Vista! This reminds me somewhat of my friend referring to the National Lottery as "The Stupid Tax". Nobody's forcing you to upgrade or use Windows at all, in fact it seems that the more sensible Windows users are sticking with XP.

In principle though, he does have a point. Why should we , once again, be charged double? Yes, our vat is higher, (what isn't), but forget business rates, etc., these are discs being churned out by the million, probably in the far east somewhere, and there are loads of people who no doubt just pay up on the assumption that this is the going rate. Everyone is making valid points about shopping around, and so on, but it just annoys me that we are continuously being taken for a ride like this. Hence MSE, of course....
  • I admit we should not be paying such a high price for Vista but this is total spam and abuse of the petition system! This is not what it's for!

I seen a petition encouraging the government to take the online petitions more seriously and this is now just making a mockery of the whole process!

Go on google and look for petition websites and start one there! Don't waste their time!!
  • I think you'll find with alot of things is that the only thing that changes is the dollar to pound sign and not the price.
Look at the price of fags and tobacco and the fact we produce it here but to get it cheaper you have to cross the channel.
