Hi
I am running on windows xp (home) all the family has there own personal user accounts (Wife and I have supervisor rights)
We browse using firefox on one pc and IE on the other. Is there a parental control device withing windows or these browsers or should I get my hands on a specific programme (maybe there is a free download out there somewhere) to do the job?
I try to keep my eyes on the kids browsing but am extreamly concerned now!
Thanks in advance
Steven

You can also block naughty words/specific sites in the url if you have a Netgear router.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

Norton Internet Security has a superb content blocking feature. It allows you, on an account by account basis, to block specific categories of content. I use it with my 14 year old and 10 year old daughters and it works a treat. The best thing about it is the blocking list which is regularly updated, but you have to pay for this after the first year. As with anything like this though, you get what you pay for and to me I don't take chances with my children by using half-cocked solutions.

Used Norton for a few years before kids got oldenough to be interested in internet and found it slowed my system up so much I had to dump it - use avg now and sytem runs a treat. Will try and get some specific download to do the job.
Tried setting content advisor in internet options but it just seems to block everything on everyones account, and doesn't work with Mozilla Firefox.
Thanks for suggestions so far

One simple technique is to make use of the Hosts file - basically this is designed to speed up looking up IP addresses by storing them on your computer ( it has
entries of
IP Address Domain
123.123.12.1 Madeupdomain.com
- however you can make use of this by using the IP address 127.0.0.1 which basically is a loopback to your own computer (i.e. request never gets out onto internet). So you would add
127.0.0.1 PornAddressToBlock.com
127.0.0.1 AnotherBadAddress.org
etc etc
Of course this is a massive task so you make use of the numerous Hosts files posted on the web (Google it)
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
Looks a good one but there are loads others.
Read the info on the above page as he also lists other progs to backup, make read-only etc etc the Hosts file which should stop a knowledgable teen hacking round the block!0 -

I haven't tried Naomi, but I was trying to block one particular kind of site and found that the filtering programs I had tried out all blocked everything.
I'm over the moon now with B Gone. Exactly what I needed. It blocks sites based on a list of words, which it compares with the words appearing in the title bar of each webpage (e.g. "Moneysavingexpert.com Forums" on this page).
It downloads with a set list of words, which can be edited, and so tailored to each PC and user. The program is pasword protected and so the list cannot be edited without knowing the password.

On the Host file Theme you could just get Spybot, in the Advanced Options there is a tab with Host File on it, click on that and add spybots list it filters alot of popups and nasty sites
Hope this helps
Spybot
also in advanced options is something called System Internals do a full scan and delete anything that comes up it tidys the registry a little. If it doesn't fit, force it; if it breaks, it needed replacement anywaySarcasm helps keep you from telling people what you really think of them

This looks pretty promising, although on a review site I noticed a few minor irritations from users. Mainly that if a webpage is blocked when trying to load, the browser closes all current pages. Very frustrating if you have quite a few tabs open. And I couldnt figure out if it could be configured for each individual user account.
Wife is a student Nurse and needs to use for her research so can't have her access restricted.
Thanks for all the ideas so far
