Ocr Help!!

Hi to all
I have been set a task of converting and updating a school history booklet from 1992. the problem is the original computer copy is lost and i was hoping to save myself some time by scanning the document into the computer and using some OCR software so i can play around with the document.
I have an Agfa snap-scan 1212u scanner but i don't have any idea on how OCR works and i don't have a program.

SO help needed is how does OCR work?
Can i just use the scanned document and re edit it without playing around to much?
And which free software do you recommend??
Thanks in advance
Niki

You will need to install some OCR software and then scan your document at a resolution of say 300dpi. Usually the scan is then dragged into the OCR software which will do it's stuff to recognise the characters so that you can then edit the text etc. Often OCR software is bundled with the scanner.
