Having tasted a few microwave meals I don't see how it's possible, they are horrible :(

I agree! (except for lasagnes are quite nice but I would do them in the oven) & I never would try to pass one off as my own, I reckon my friends and family aren't that daft. I'm getting used to cooking from scratch now so would rather serve something with a bit of effort gone into it :)

Must agree with Moggins, I used to buy a lot of them, way too much, now I have had a go at homemade (ok with a few disasters) I can honestly say I am now saving myself time and money by not buying them! I never tried to pass them off as my own. I also think they now taste awful, they just filled a gap before where as now I enjoy what I make. I can't understand how someone can think they are homemade.
One day I might be more organised...........

I feel the same way moggins - but maybe they are good compared to some people's efforts?

You can tell a ready meal a million paces away, even M&S top drawer stuff is a givaway. Anyone passing shop bought off as their own is fooling no-one but themselves and I've been to plenty of dinner parties where they have tried LOL.

  • I think that there are some, generally M&S expensive, microwave meals which are nice, but the majority are just rank (IMHO). I have tried quite a few when I was working full time and they nearly all went in the bin. Now I batch cook and freeze stuff in Costco plastic containers which you can use in the micro and freezer (about £6 for 200 or something like that) and the stuff is much nicer. The worst microwave meal, I think, is cottage pie - it is just so vile and sloppy and always has a funny taste. I went to a friends yesterday and she had done ribs and they were so obviously from the supermarket ready meal section but she was adamant that she had made them! They actually weren't bad, in general ribs are about the best I think.

No I would not pass off any shop bought readymeal off as my own. I too think they all have a funny tang or texture to them.

It makes me laugh when you go to someone who has done a buffet and you get the "you must have worked really hard" yeah! getting the scissors out to open a few packets and stick them in the oven to warm is sooooooo exhausting!!! lol Give me home baked stuff anyday.

I used to buy ready meals, but never passed them off as my own, I wouldn't dare.

I've never tried M&S ready meals so I couldn't say, but then and now, I wouldn't buy them I suspect they are far, far to expensive.

we used to have ready meals but never passed them off as home made.we now make all meals from scratch, some good some disasters, but to push in on your question now that most people here make meals from scratch do you think we would be able to spot a ready meal by taste alone?
