I’m off to London in a couple of weeks for a day out with the misses.
Has anyone here got any recommendations for things to do there that wont break the bank?
thanks

Most of the museums are free and worth a visit. Go to South kensington on the tube and a few minutes away is the Naturual History Museum Science Museum beside it and acroos the road the V&A. Also a number of art galleries are free.
I personally think a guided tour bus is great value (my relatives love the Original London Bus tour, when they come to London, as it includes a hop on and off service, full commentary and boat tours for about £20pp and you can upgrade to the choice menu to get lunch for £3 each. I always think the embankment is particularly nice when lit up at night and a boat cruise both in the daylight and at dusk/when dark is lovely.
You can however do a tour just using your London travel cards (or Oyster). eg. the no 15 bus goes from Marble Arch to London Tower and takes in a lot of the sights on the way (you have to know what you are looking for though and may need a guide book to know the history). You can then go into the Tower Of London.
2 for 1 vouchers can be printed off (Tower Of London included) and used with a valid (that days travel date) train ticket (not Oyster).

Hi Ianmonkey,
There is a really nice website which we use whenever we venture down to the smoke - lots of ideas of free events etc:
www.londonisfree.com
Plus many of the best museums (eg Natural History) and art galleries (National) are free, but also packed on a rainy day for just that reason! If the weather is nice, then St James's Park, Green Park etc are all nice for a wander, as is Trafalgar Square. And of course shops are potentially free if you only browse.;)
I still think a boat trip on the Thames is one of my favourite cheap ways to see the sights, plus Covent Garden for street entertainment.
Have a great trip, just prioritise what you want to spend your money on, it's not as expensive as going to the eurozone that's for sure!"Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm" (Sir Winston Churchill)0 -
Walking and sightseeing is free!
The Tate Modern is free and a lovely gallery. Combine a visit there with a walk accross the wobbly Millenium Bridge and then a walk along the south bank.
Wandering around Covent Garden can be fun as there are a lot of street entertainers to watch.
Eating out can be very reasonable, if you check menus and deals before you go in anywhere, even in central London.
Have a look at this website too:

Went on the Big Bus open top ride round London a couple of years ago, sat at the front on the top with a friend and a flask of coffee - great way to see London. October's probably not the best time of year for this but it's a great way to see loads of sites in one go.0 -
thanks guys, great help0

Don't forget to stroll around Portobello if the weather is nice. It's great for looking around all the old shops and trade benches. It feels like you've stepped into a different timeline

You could also try www.travelodge.co.uk and click on saver rooms. Usually you have to book each night separate to get the saver rate.
You could also check out holidayinns using this 2 nights for price of 1 link
