Homemade liver treats

Options
When I took my retriever to dog training the trainer gave me this recipe for liver treats.

They are cheap to make and even the fussiest dog will eat them, infact my cats love them.:rotfl:

Recipe
1lb 400gms liver (any liver)
1 clove of garlic
1 egg
8oz 200gms flour

Method

1)Place liver, garlic and egg into a liquidiser until smooth.
2)Stir in the flour. Line and grease a baking tray (with sides).
3)Cook on a low to moderate heat about 130 degrees centegrade for about 1 hour or until it is firm at the centre.
4)Leave to cool cut up into small cubes.
5) Seperate into little containers and keep in the fridge.

NB This is a rich recipe and don't be tempted to give the dog too much especially small dogs.

They will love you even more than before and its brilliant for training.:T

You can also replace the liver with a tin of tuna ;)
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

Liquidising liver is pretty vile though, keep the windows open!! :rotfl:
A dog is for life not just for Christmas.
    How about a rescue dog?

My mums cat is 18 and he's eaten liver treats. I searched the internet and a found a website that said raw garlic is supposed to be bad for cats. However this recipe would cook the garlic. I hope that puts your mind at rest.

Another website said garlic is supposed to get rid of fleas.... I never knew that:T

Somebody should tell the dogs fleas it would save me a fortune:rotfl:

Thank you Shaz, i used to make a treat like this for my dog, but have lost the recipe, so thank you for posting this one, my vet said that all the ingredients are good for dogs, garlic for fleas, egg, for her coat, the liver is ok as well. Just don't go overboard with handing out the treat, as you say its a rich recipe. Anyway thanks for the post, i am now going to make somemore for my "little" hound. It'll make her day.

  • I add a tablespoon of olive oil when I make it - good for my springer's coat.

I bake a liver bread most Sundays to give us a week's worth of training treats - we have to open the kitchen windows and all the two-legged members of the household hate the smell - but our 22 week old springer sits drooling at the kitchen door in eager anticipation! Mind you - he's not averse to finishing off a half eaten kebab in the park given half a chance .. yuk!

I'm sure Springer Spaniels are part womble judging by the amount of litter he collects!

Oooh! Thanks for the Olive oil tip, that does make a lot of sense. I will be adding it in about 10 mins, when i start to make the liver treat, cake, or what ever it's called. I have got some whole meal flour, so will be using that instead of plain flour. Long live the dog liver treat thread.
