Lard is basically pig fat taken from various parts of the animal. I've found the best pastry uses half-lard, half-margerine, but you can use all lard or all butter if you prefer, particularly for sweet dishes like mince pies. However bear in mind that lard has less saturated fat, more unsaturated fat and less cholesterol than butter, plus it has no trans fat compared to margerine; it really isn't the unhealthy choice some people assume.0

Lard is rendered pork fat. It is perfectly safe to eat
It contains no trans fats and makes lovely pastry. I use half butter and half lard, but all butter is fine.
Obviously it isn't suitable for vegetarians, Jews or Muslims.0 -
Most recipes I have seen say half and half, which is what i was going to do.....
I will speak with dh and see what he wants to do, there is no point me making them if he won't eat them.
I wonder what Asda use in there freshly baked ones......probably Lard!!!

You can use white flora or Trex. They are vegetable fat.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

Right i will have a look out Trex.
TBH I think I will make a batch using each method, that way we can do the taste test and see if there is a difference......
Thanks for all your input.

However, bear in mind that white cooking fats such as |Trex are usually very heavily hydrogenated, which is worse than saturated fat for you. I would echo Sola that lard isn't as bad as it's made out to be. However if dh is veggie, that answers that one!!!!“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

Trex has no hydrogenated fat.0 -
I would have checked for hydrogenated, as we avoid it at all costs, you have saved me the job....
I am off to asda in a minute so will look out for it.
