Lappy battery "needs replacing" after 8 months...

it's a Dell Inspiron 1520. I bought it from tesco extra, ex display and it was a real bargain at the time.

I did notice straight away that there would be huge "leaps" in battery power- it would go from (eg) 3hr 10mins remaining, to 2hr20 etc. But I didn't think too much of it.

Anyhow, a week ago it was telling me that the battery is reaching the end of it's usable life. The last day or so, it's been telling me that it now needs replacing. Even on power saver I'm lucky to get 40-50 mins.

My question is this- am I right in thinking Dell batteries have a 12 month warranty? And if so, does anyone know what Tescos would be likely to do? I'm quite attached to my laptop

Whoops! That's more than one question! Any help, advice or pointers greatly appreciated.

hi i would take it to tesco first they may offer you a replacement as their usually pretty good . if not your laptop will be under warranty with dell just go on the dell website. hope this helps

Sales of goods act make tesco responsible. If you were warned that the laptop or battery may have been compromised due to being the display model then Tesco could have themselves covered but I doubt they did.

Hate to say it, but laptop batteries are usually classed as consumable items. If I remember rightly, most manufacturers will only guarantee them for 3 months except for genuine manufacturing defects.

The other thing with laptop batteris is you should remove them if you are using it mains power for more than short periods of time. I have a work one from HP and because we had not been told this most machines starting getting very short (20min) battery life after about a year.

Thanks for the advice guys. Nope, you're quite right, Tesco didn't say anything about it being an ex-display.

I guess I need to clarify if Dell batteries are covered for a year- I'm sure I read it on hear somewhere.

I would go to Tesco and see what they say before having a go with Dell. You have a better chance with Tesco who know very little about laptop batteries and the fact they may only be covered for a short period of time where Dell will know their policy and just try to sell you a replacement battery. Tesco may just consider the laptop faulty as it only lasts 40-50 minutes and not know the reason why laptop batteries end up knackered.
