Kenyan Safari

My wife lived in Kenya during her childhood and has fond memories. She visited many parks and lived near Nairobi. We have been married 25 years next year and i am researching a surprise trip. Where would the best area to go be? Combined sun and safari holiday to rekindle her memories.
It pays to challenge

Hubby and I went on Safari in February this year with a company called Somak.

We had Peter as our guide and he was fantastic. We stayed at Samburu, Treetops, Lake Nackuru and Masai Mara. We then went to south of Mobassa and stayed at Southern Palms Resort for a week.

The Safari was fantastic. Saw all the big 5 and loads more. A week on the beach for us was too long although the hotel was near perfect. 4 days would have been better. Look up Somak and see what package they can put together for you. The Safari started and finnsihed in Nairobi. Can't wait to go again.... :D

We visited Kenya for a friends wedding in 2004 and the island of Lamu was fabulous we stayed at Kipungani, the wedding was at Kizingo (eco-friendly, mentioned in Sunday times top 10)just along the beach both were perfect for a get away beach chill out. You can do activities also if inclined. Lamu is a short plane ride from Nairobi. I have not safari'd in kenya only tanzania. Don't stay at the nairobi hilton though it's dive.

I agree with Smartsaver... we went with Thomas Cook Signatures but Somak ran everything in Kenya, and did it really well. I could have done without Treetops, which very much lives on the fact that HRH was there when her father died and she became queen.. But the others, particularly Samburu and Masai Mara were Fantastic. So much wildlife to see. We then spent a week in Mombasa which I thought was a waste of time and money (then again I'm not a sun, sea and sand kind of person). I would have much preferred a few more days on safari instead.
I'm Glad to be here... At my age I'm glad to be anywhere!!

Treetpos is awesome depending when you go and what you see! Not the same one that HRH stayed at as this one burnt down. It is a bit like a wooden ship built between 2 trees. You have buzzers in your rooms which you can switch off if you want. They buzz you when animals turn up at the watering hole. We watched 24 elephant for over 2 hours and felt very humble and this made the treetops experience worthwhile for us. It is not luxary accomdation but very different!

Te record book sated others had not seen ay animals so I can see how this woud seem like a lot of effort anda waste of time.

It is also quite cold there which may come as a surprise. This is all year round as it is very high above sea level. Take a fleece and ther give you blankets. You are encouraged to stay up as long as possible at night to watch the animals. Have a great time!

I can't wait to go back on safari but would prefer 10 days safari and 4 on each to recover as is a punnishing regime of early mornings :)

What's the "all-in" cost for something like this ?
