Gas supply other than Transco to E-on?
Options
I went through the price comparison sites and E-On come out over £100 cheaper than Scottish Power, so I commenced the transfer. We received a letter this week from E-On saying that the gas is provided by an Independent supplier and it will therefore be another £42 a year on top of the original quote. Is there anyway to know if this is true please? We are on a main estate in a main city in the UK, so find it strange gas would be provided by anyone other than Transco??
Many thanks

transco is are the peeps in uk that own the supply pipes etc and now called national grid http://www.nationalgrid.com/uk/ as far as I am aware there are no other people involved
here is there gas page http://www.nationalgrid.com/uk/Gas/
so basically the supplier is the person you buy it from and they get it via national grid so sounds odd to me check with these people

There are various independent gas transporters now, so it is very likely that
E-on are being truthful, lots of new build properties are non transco and while some suppliers will charge extra if this is the case, not all do. It can also take longer to change suppliers if you are an IGT (Independent Gas Transporter) area. Take a look at this link which may help.

Apparently mine is suplied through Independent Pipelines Ltd. The builders saved money when they built the estate - we residents will now be paying a premium for life!
So yet another consumer con - so much for privatisation and competition in the market bringing prices down - I have the opportunity to spend an extra £42 per year because of this. Hopefully more than Energylinx will campaign on this issue.

Not sure how Energylinx will have a case when there was strong lobbying to break Transco's monopoly on distributing gas. It's called the free market.
At one time Powergen owned some of these networks, not sure if they do now. I am sure other suppliers own some networks, so maybe not in their interests to want a change and pass on price reductions of the gas0 -
Not all suppliers charge this premium, I know BG don't, and have an inkling that SSE don't.
Something that you'll need to take into account when switching.
The switching sites won't be able to tell if you are on one of these, but you can spot it if your supply number (MPR) begins with a 7.0 -
The bit that annoyed me is that they should know when you put your postcode that there will be an extra charge but they dont appear to factor that in so it looks like you are getting a better deal than you actually are.
Just switched to eon today and the £42 was snuck in under the agree t&cs bit just before accepting. I almost missed it.:j0 -
The switching companies use your postcode to determine your pricing region. They have no way of knowing which company was used to lay the gas pipes in that area (think how many postoces there are in Britain). It's possible that a postcode could have had some pipes laid by Transco* and some newer ones by an IGT. The only way is if to tell is if your MPR starts with a 7.
*Transco-laid pipes would now be owned by Scotland Gas Networks, Northern Gas Networks, National Grid Gas or Wales & West Utilities, but this doesn't affect how they are charged.0
