I use a tin of chickpeas, a generous dollop of tahini, some oilive oil, lemon juice and garlic. You really need to practise with it, as I have found some recipes too oily, others too garlicy. Tahini really is essential for it to taste like hummous. You can buy it in jars in supermarkets.0

I've never tasted it, perhaps I should buy some first so I know what I'm trying to achieve.
I have a 14mth old and 3yr old, I thought it would be a nutricious thing for their lunch.
Thanks.Nevermind the dog, beware of the kids!0 -
I don't know anything about feeding kids but it might be a good idea to try a tub from the supermarket before buying tahini and chickpeas. It is nutritious, but can contain alot of olive oil if you aren't careful. I sometimes have it for lunch with crispbreads, carrot and pepper sticks.0

what is tahini and how much does it cost to buy?0

If you don't have/can't find tahini you can substitute with a few drops of sesame oil and peanut butter instead"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

Tahini is a sesame seed paste, and in costs about 1.35 for a jar in sainsburies. You can store it in the fridge and i think it lasts a long time when opened.0

Tahini is made from crushed sesame seeds mixed with olive oil. Personaly, I don't use it in my own hummus as it produces quite a bitter after taste. There are no hard and fast rules, experiment with the ingredients untill you get a balance you're happy with.0 -
I use chickpeas, sesame seeds and olive oil and then I add either lime juice and chopped coriander or sundried tomatoes, all whizzed in the food processor. Whoops, forgot the garlic - I add that too!!0

spicy Hummus
14oz can chickpeas
1-2 garlic cloves, peeled
juice from 1 large or 2 small lemons
4 tbs tahini
1 tbs cumin seeds
a good pinch of chilli powder
salt
Drain the chickpeas and save the liquid. Whiz chickpeas in a food processor with the whole garlic cloves, lemon juice and tahini to make a smooth paste. It will be very thick, so add some of the saved liquid from the canned chickpeas to thin it down - the exact amount will depend on how thick the tahini was.
Toast the cumin seeds by stirring them over a gentle heat in a dry saucepan for a minute or so until they smell aromatic and begin to pop. Stir into the hummus along with the chilli powder season with salt to taste.0
