Sorry if asked before. If FSA safety net only applies to total amount held within banking groups and taking the advise to spread your savings across a number of banking groups.
Where do you find info on banking / BS groups.

Yes, can anybody give a listing/grouping of all the well-known and major ones.
Say: come up with a list/grouping so that there are 5+ separate places to put the money.
I don't think being able to list 5+ definitive names/groups is too hard for somebody that knows what they're doing.
Thanks in advance0 -
Bump. Surely someone knows how to get this info.0

Well, here are some linked banks/bs, perhaps others can add to the list?
HBOS- Birmingham midshires - Halifax - Intelligent Finance - Bank of Scotland
Abbey - Cahoot
RBS - Yorkshire BS - Nat West - Direct Line - Ulster BankI'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
All you need to do is go to each bank group's website and see who the group owns, here are some examples
RBS http://www.rbs.com/about03.asp?id=ABOUT_US/OUR_BRANDS
HBOS http://www.hbosplc.com/abouthbos/group_company_websites.asp
LloydsTSB http://www.lloydstsb.com/lloyds_tsb_group_site.asp0 -
I don't remember RBS buying Yorkshire Building Society. When did that happen?zzzLazyDaisy wrote: »RBS - Yorkshire BS - Nat West - Direct Line - Ulster Bank
What you're looking for is the banking licence number, which is issued by the FSA. For example, Halifax and Birmingham Midshires share the same licence, whereas Sainsburys Bank has a different licence number, being 50:50 owned with Bank of Scotland.caveman38 wrote:Surely someone knows how to get this info.
You can search out organisations on the FSA register*, where you will find their 'partners' listed.

So Sainsburys and Birmingham Midshires are both part of HBOS, and the FSCS limits (100% of 1st 2K, 90% of rest up to 35K) apply to the WHOLE group, i.e. add them together then apply the rule? All you need to do is go to each bank group's website and see who the group owns, here are some examples

If that was right, surely NatWest (121878) and RBS (121882) would have the same number?YorkshireBoy wrote: »What you're looking for is the banking licence number, which is issued by the FSA. I could have got that wrong then. All I know is that Nat West Bank handle the standing order for my YBS regular saver. Maybe there is no connection.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0

It looks like NatWest retained their own licence number when they merged with RBS in 2000 (as Halifax and Bank of Scotland did with their own merger).
All I know is that Nat West Bank handle the standing order for my YBS regular saver.
Natwest run the 'collection' account for YBS BACS transfers. If that was right, surely NatWest (121878) and RBS (121882) would have the same number?0 -
Sorry if this is a silly question, but in that case how can we rely on that method to find out who owns who, and therefore compensation limits?YorkshireBoy wrote: »It looks like NatWest retained their own licence number when they merged with RBS in 2000 (as Halifax and Bank of Scotland did with their own merger).0
