I must say I find these challenges inspiring. I just wish it'd been my idea. The concepts is simple, you set yourself a strict grocery budget for the month, and then try and stick to it. It's perfect for those who need to cut back on the shopping. Then if that's your diet, this is your weight watchers. Here you can share you thoughts and hints with others doing something similar.
So tell us your limit and keep in touch with how it's going.

Its a bit early yet but thought I would gear up for next month's challenge for anyone too late to join the Feb challenge. I'm waiting for Feb to end before I set my next target.
Welcome to anyone new to the challenges, have a read through some threads and ask any questions you like

My personal challenge will be £20 a week, for 1 adult and 3 kids. I intend doing this by taking the money out of the bank and having it in a separate purse. Also may see if i can manage without using home delivery, and use my wally trolley more!Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

My challange for March is to stick to listed fortnightly supermarket shops with a £6 maximum fruit & veg top up in between, instead of giving in & popping into Sainsbuyrs for a loaf, a bunch of bananas & a carton of orange juice & spending an extra £20 and still forgetting the bananas!
Total grocery spending aim for month : £112 for 2 adults, 1 dog & 1 catPost Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

For "grocery spending" do you include things such as takeaways and lunches at work or in restaurants, etc, too?0

I guess it depends on your way of budgeting. For us we inculde takeaways but these are a very rare occurance & never unplanned (in fact our takeaway rule is only the last Friday before payday and then only if there is the cost of the takeway left in the grocery budget & a simlar ammount again to go into savings or very very special occasions.......I think the last time was for the final episode of Friends!), eating out comes under entertainment not groceries & there is always food on hand at home to make lunches so if we can't be bothered that has to come out of our personal spending money.
Thanks for starting March's thread off nice & early by the way, for me March starts on the 23rd of Feb 'cos I use payday months not calendar months!Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

You've really raised the bar (or is that lowered?). I don't know if I can keep up. Does anyone have a recipe for stone soup?

I wouldnt get takeaways that isnt very moneysaving is it? Seeing as you could spend a whole weeks' grocery money in one evening
Same with meals at work. If i had a job i would take packed lunches. Bought sandwiches are a rip off.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

Thanks Lillibet,
As Mr Thrift gets paid weekly we set our everyday stuff budget by his pay, and I recently reduced it by £30 a week to cover some unpaid time off he had. But we have managed to stick to it so far and plan to continue to use the reduced budget after the lost money's accounted for.
Anyway, our budget is £20 a week for food at home and out / takeaways, £25 a week for food and drink we take to work to make breakfasts and lunches and £10 a week for toiletries and household products. Which sounds OK broken down like that but it's £55 a week now I think about it, eek!
Will start by reducing it by a fiver and knocking the work food down to £20 / week, making the total £50 / week and see how we get on.....0 -
I can't argue with that Sarahsaver, but we have a heck of a lot less takeaways than we used to, and we've never gone without anything else to fund them. But sometimes we just can't resist the smell of the chip shop or Chinese and treat ourselves!
And the food for work isn't bought sandwiches - I don't throw money away that easily! :-) I have things like fruit, cereal and yoghurt for breakfast at work and snacks through the day and something like humous and rice cakes for lunch, while Mr T goes through phases of things like sausage rolls and scotch eggs and if he's having sandwiches we buy the ingredients and make them up in the kitchen at work (we work at the same place.) My main excuse for splashing out a wee bit on work food is that it helps us through the working day, but I will make an effort to cut back.0 -
I'm afraid that I'll have to start properly with the April grocery challenge as I'm going to Italy this weekend for a whole month (life is tough, isn't it!). However, before I go, I'm stocking up the freezer for my OH so that he doesn't go back to his single ways.
He's got portions of casserole, chilli and tonight some bolognese sauce will go in there too. Hopefully he won't starve too much.
I have been following the February challenge, but not as fully as I'd have liked due to my hefty travelling to and from college. I'll get sorted out over the Easter hols though....
