I've just been given a 3lb bag of grated cheddar cheese and I could do with some ideas on how to use it up without an instant coronary.
I thought about making and freezing pizzas and cheese sauce to have with cauli etc. (Can I freeze cheese sauce??)
I have also been given a large bag of red onions.
Any ideas ?
Thanks

Do you have any potatoes? How about cheese and potatoe pie?
Boil your pots, add grated cheese and diced onion
Top with cheese and grill
Got pastry? How about a cheese and onion flan?
No recipe though for that.
Freeze the cheese?
Dice and freeze the onions?Lucylema x :j0 -
You can freeze the cheese as it is. Then, whenever you need a bit of grated cheese, just give the bag a good thump & it separates back so you can grab a bit. It defrosts very quickly as it's already been grated.
If you have a HUGE amount of red onions you could make caramelised onions in the slow cooker & freeze that once cooked. Or french onion soup (same as caramelised onions, then add stock). Top the soup with a bit of bread, & some of the cheese & grill it.0 -

I would freeze the cheese too. It's so handy to reach into the freezer and grab some pre-grated cheese when making cheese sauce or toppings.
For red onions this thread might help:
Too many red onions how can I use them up?

I like to slice and fry mine in garlic butter.
You could roast them or slice them and use them as a pie topping. Slice and layer with cooked onion as in the cheese pie in the previous post. Spanish omelette.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4.............................NCFC member No: 00005.........

Thanks everyone, I never thought of just freezing it as it is.
I love the idea of caramelised onions in the slow cooker, do I just throw them in and leave them a week and a half ;o)
Thanks for directing me to the other thread also0 -

Is that a technical cooking term?
Yes - it is the 'official' term for what you do when you take a bag of something frozen out of the freezer. Like peas. You take the bag, & hit it at an angle against your worktop...
please note...I take no responsibility for any damage to your worktop
Back to the OP, for caramelised onions, I start frying them in a pan, just so they get some colour. Then throw them into the slow cooker with a big lump of butter. I find 5 - 8 hours does it...a week might be a little excessive0
