Halifax Closed Grandies Savings Accounts Down

I am really P
this morning .
I have four grandchildren , they have ( or had ) bank accounts with Halifax that I opened for them as they where born . They saved christmas and birthday money in there accounts , and I saved coppers in a jar and split it between them when it was full.
This morning I received a cheque and a letter for one of the accounts stating that the account had been closed , so I rang to ask why , because of your the bankruptcy order we recieved from the or ,they said ,the other three accounts will be closed too.
Why have you done that I asked , if the official receiver was not interested in the childrens bank accounts , why have you done it , because of the bankruptcy notice she said again.
But that was my bankruptcy and not my grandchildrens , So again I asked , what has my bankruptcy got to do with my grandchildres bank accounts , why have you closed the accounts? If the official receiver wasn,t interested them.
She blustered and said the children could go in and open accounts in there own names. With you petty lot I said , no bl---y chance.
So I have now got to sort savings accounts out , to pay these cheques into. Does anybody know how old they have to be to open there own accounts.

  • Hi Jays.
What a rotten thing to happen, though the Halifax are known for it:rolleyes:
I don't know if there is an age limit. MY DD had an account from birth, but i had control of it and my name on it. She then got an account with Nat West and at age 11 (i think) they gave her a solo card and control of her own account.
Is there someone elses name you can put it in if they're too young to have their own account? maybe the parents. Barclays are happy to have BRs but then they wouldn't earn any interest on the basic accounts.
Have you got enough in there to maybe put them into premium bonds?
The first time we said hello, was the first time we said goodbye. As the angels took your tiny hand and flew you to the sky-you forever left us breathless. RIP my beautiful granddaughter :(

THe children can be any age to open their accounts. My two children opened their first account at age about 4 with Abbey (National as it was then) and I was never a signatory or anything on them. I didn't want to have access to their accounts. Now they are teenagers and have their own cash cards. When my son turned 16 they sent him a cheque book and debit card!

Sorry I have not replied ,been out all day, the children are 5 ,8, 9 and 10, We have an Abbey National in our little town about ten minutes away so I guess by the above post they should all be old enough to open there own accounts there.
    thanks for your replies Jaysgirl

That's so ridiculous! Why are we treated like criminals when we go bankrupt.. it's not like the majority of us have commited fraud as such.. makes me really angry..

I hope you get it sorted out..

I just got a new job with Norwich Union who were superb about my bankruptcy, shame the banks and building societys arn't the same as i'm a qualified mortgage advisor just looking for a fresh start..

Chin up, think of it as a way of getting them a better account and interest rate perhaps..

    You don't need their accounts.!

Yes it is annoying I would not have been so bothered if the halifax had been one of my debtors, but it wasn,t. Mine was just a savings account it had the grand sum of £3 in it when I went bankrupt. The official receiver said he had no interest in it. So they still owe me that £3 pounds .

I'm not too happy with the Halifax in general, greedy lot of !!!!!!s.

My son went overdrawn on his student account by £4, he doesn't even have an overdraft and because he didn't realise this, they have charged him £28 twice which I am disgusted with.

Maybe new accounts for the kiddies might not be such a bad idea JG.......

    Hope they get sorted out

Apart from my children's Abbey accounts they also have HSBC accounts that they opened (again I have never had any access to these accounts) when they were about 7&8. They also received the relevant cash cards when they reached a certain age. I'm sure most banks will open an account as they like to start brand loyalty young.

  • Have a look around you might find a much better account for them. When you do write a letter to Halifax thanking them for getting the kids a better deal.
Halifax are the worst bank we have delt with, they don't give a stuff about their customers.
