I think Norton offers you the chance to continue with them but i think they expect a little remuneration for that privilege.
  • This has benn discussed before- its actually better to use the free AV programs... but as its free for 6 months, thats pretty good I guess :-D - you used to be able to turn the clock back on your PC to get more updates...dont know if that still works!

Norton has long been regarded as a Rolls-Royce product in the security arena, and I have no reason not to think that it offers good protection. However a Roller is very heavy, takes a lot of stopping once it's moving, consumes lots of fuel, and the maintenance bills are not reputed to be on the minimalist agenda. RR used to be famously vague about the mpg, with such phrases as "..if you have to ask how much to run, you couldn't afford it.."

Such tradition carries on, and if you take at look at Symantec's own page that it's had to construct in response to the natural question "what if I can't afford it?" then you'll see that there's a bit of uphill running to do before you're allowed to jump off the wagon.

After six months, I think that they're betting you can't be bothered to find all this out for yourself again, and will just go on paying the subscription fee. You should install this stuff only with your eyes wide open.
  • Norton was the best a couple of years ago. However, there are a number of good freeware/shareware anti virus programmes out there. I recommend AVG, which is free and currently performs better than most:

It is probably best if you run a number of programmes together because one alone can never be 100% effective - I also run 'Spybot Search and Destroy' and 'Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition', amoungst others, which are also free and can be downloaded from https://www.computeractive.co.uk/downloads (all computer active downloads have been virus scanned and are safe to download)

I remember when Norton was just Peter Norton. Things seemed somewhat simpler then. :)
    Can I help?

Just to echo what you're saying, AVG is VERY good, and I've used Norton for years. Options are limited in the free version, but it does a daily virus scan, and to be honest, I feel more secure than I did with Nav... less stuff going on in the background, AVG is very up front about what it does.
