What would you do?

Just after xmas last year I bought a Fujitsu Siemens Laptop from Dixons for £499 (It was actually misadvertised as having a few features that werent actually on it so in the end they knocked £100 off).

Around about June it died a death. As it was covered by the 12 month warranty it went in for repair and I was a little surprised to discover it needed a new hard drive. All repaired it came back a week later. By August the powerpack had failed so back it went again for a new one. At the end of October it failed for the third time, DH spoke to the repair center today to be told it needed a new motherboard!!

Now, call me niave, but I find it amazing that a Laptop thats 10 months old can need new Harddrive, Motherboard and powerpack! The repair center told DH today that it could be "some time" before its returned as the motherboard is out of stock and they are waiting for parts from Fujitsu.

I need this laptop for college work, and frankly Im a little worried about its longevity after the 12 months is up (around the 28th December). Am I right in thinking I could argue that this is goods not fit for the purpose? Its not had heavy use because lets face it, its been in for repair for what must amount to 6 weeks!

  • Yes I agree. I think you have a strong case to ask for your money back given the history of this unit or replacement.

If it were me I would go down the Small Claims Route if they did not play ball.

If it got to that stage I'm sure the court would view a replacement or refund as Reasonable.

    Good Luck

I would go as far as to say, the hard drive, powerpack and motherboard is ALL there is to a laptop....you can count the screen and case as the "box" the bits get carried about in....about all thats left to fail is the memory and that is user replaceble anyway....it reminds me of triggers broom in only fools and horses....its over 15 years old and its still going strong.....the handle's been replaced a few times and so has the shaft....but its still the same broom!!!

Demand a replacement or refund....they have had the opportunity to replace and repair and failed....contact them and advise you want to place a time limit on this latest fault for repair....if they cannot meet that, tell them you want a replacement or refund.....and don't talk to the numpties on the shop floor....in my experience if you get a senior manager....they don't want the hassle....and hassle is what you should give them....they will pass it back to the local store manager and tell them to "sort it"....dixons, pcworld and currys are all "box shifters"....they dont want grief from customers if you back off....they're happy to let you.... they normally don't want a fight....

  • what model is yours. i'm certain thats the one my sister got and she got a new hard drive about 8 weeks ago and then yesterday she turned the screen on and it's all blank and after restarting a few times you can see a very very faint picture on the screen, so will have to send it back again. if it's the same model perhaps it's a common fault

I work for a manufacturer, anything that has failed twice under the warranty would be replaced, especially if the customer was civil, people who shout first get the minimum service level in my experience. Drop the reseller an email or a letter setting out the facts include any case numbers etc and the dates when it was in for repair, don't assume they will know the history.
Finish off the letter with a request for your money back on the grounds that you have lost confidence in the product.

Hi Charb, its an Amilo L7300. Thanks for the replies guys, I have lost confidence in the thing, and like I said earlier its something I need for college research. I do have access to a desktop PC (DH's which Im on now!) but I take the laptop into college to benefit from the WiFi connectivity there.

I think Ill get DH to contact the repairers on monday and see where we go (softly softly approach as suggested). Who would be responisble for a replacement? Dixons or Fujitsu themselves?

    Thanks again

I would be tempted to speak directly to Fujitsu or whoever the manufacturer is ( I know the contract is with the retailer) as sometimes they will override the retailer and sort out a new one or replacement as goodwill
