Chest freezer to go in garage

Options
An old GF wants to buy a new freezer; it has to go in the garage as her house isn't big enough. She'll want one rated at A+ for energy as that's part of the reason for getting a new one (the other aspect is that the old one is, er, old and might break down).

I've done a lot of searching and 'phoning but can't find anything that'll be OK at lower than +10C (one Hotpoint said 'suitable for outbuildings' but was +16C, so I guess that was for Mediterranian climes!).

Anybody know of anything please?

We bought a wee square chest freezer for our summerhouse hut from Comet several years ago. On the details it mentioned that it was suitable for outbuildings and we have had no problems with it. Also my mum recently bought a chest freezer slightly bigger to go in her garage in December so they are out there for sale. Hope you find one,

  • Yes, Comet was mentioned on a site but a 'phone call didn't help - dimdroid was just regurgitating what was in the specs. of the common freezers. Matter of luck, really.

Hi we were looking for a freezer just before christmas and two i found that say they work outside are the Electrolux ECN 30104w 10.6 cu ft c rated £234 at johnlewis.co .uk and the hotpoint RCN AA53p 10.2 cu ft a+ rated £272 at comet.
But are old fridgedare freezer works fine outside and the company said it wont this was a few years ago too, just the lid is showing its age from me using it as a work top!

  • I'd looked at the Hotpoint as it says that it's OK for outbuildings. Just rung Hoptpoint and was told the same. It's a bit small, so possibly 2 of them...
  • I went through a similar selection excercise a few months ago for an upright freezer suitable for a garage. The only manufacturer that I could find that clearly stated that their FREEZERS were suitable was BEKO. Therefore I decided on a TZDA 629FW. this has proved an excellent buy. I did place a brief review on the Comet website :- http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/391255/BEKO-TZDA629FS/tab/reviews#reviews

BEKO low ambient temperature statement within their FAQs :-

I notice they do manufacture one small chest freezer.

    Hope this may help.
  • I bought an a+ Whirlpool chest freezer over 18 months ago which sits in the garage and I haven't had any problems with it. Just a normal chest freezer as I didn't realise you had to have a specific one for a garage or outbuilding?!!!

Wow, I had no idea that you needed special versions to go outside. I have had mine outside for 6 years now and never had a problem and I just bought the first one I liked- cant even remember the brand. Was under the impression this would be more energy efficient as less power used to cool it as it is already cold. when home later on will google make to see if any probs reported.

I have had an AEG Freezer working 100%, out in my garage for over 25 years, never had a problem, I am convinced that a new one would never last that long.
  • Just thought I'd throw in a further point.
I dare say most freezers these days are all built the same way and probably many of them on the same production lines. All of the new ones use the R100 butane refrigerant (more environmentally friendly) which is not as tolerant to low temperatures.
The point I was making about BEKO is that they are prepared to Guarantee that their freezers will work at low ambient temperatures whereas other makes will not, (even if technically there is little or no difference).
So the choice probably comes down to whether or not you want to be covered by a makers Warranty or not.
