I'm no expert, but I think it comes down to volume of replies alot of the time. Too many people offer to the first responder but I guess that is there choice it's just frustrating for those of us not able to sit waiting for the good or really needed stuff.
The biggest turn off for people who offer stuff is abrupt and even rude responders. I usually just put that I am interested in the offered item and that I am in xxx but will collect at their covenience.0 -
A good tip is to subscribe to 'individual emails' rather than the 'daily digest'. That way you get to know about items as soon as they're posted. I used to have the daily digest, but found that as soon as I received it, any item I was interested in was already gone. To change the subscription, just click on 'edit membership', and then choose 'individual emails'.
Yes, it helps to be polite! I must say I find it off-putting when someone responds to an item I'm offering with 'I'll take it off your hands', like they're doing me a favour! It's just basic good manners really.
Re. changing your username (Yahoo ID)- I've had a quick look on the website and there doesn't seem to be any way of doing this. It seems you can only change your password, not your ID (unlesss I'm missing something?) I would think it would be best to start again and open another account with whatever ID you want.0 -
Thanks very much everyone, for all your replies it has helped i feel im very polite when i have responded to the advertisements maybe people do just respond to a first come first served basis.I am having a clear out and am going to offer all of my bits and bobs on free cycle so i suppose i will get an idea of what happens.
How do you subscribe to invidual emails? as i said im new to free cycle and im not that fussy on yahoo email i use gmail which i find alot easier to manage
Thanks for all your replys and i welcome any other advice

I have more than one id linked to my yahoo account so it should be possible to make a new id and use that even if you can't delete your old id you shouldn't have to use it.
As for changing the email frequency, go to the group's homepage and find the "edit my membership" button. Then there's an option to change email frequency from "daily digest" to individual emails".No Links in Signatures by Site Rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -

Re. the email address you use- you can choose which one the emails come to. Click on 'my account' at the top of the page, then you can edit your email information on there, and choose one to be your 'primary' email. You don't have to use Yahoo's!0 -
Go to the website of your Freecycle group (eg. mine is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/chestercityeastfreecycle/), then click on 'edit membership' (near the top), then you can select either 'individual emails' or 'daily digest'. It does mean that you'll get rather a lot of emails, but I've found that is the only way to make sure you can actually get something!

When the item has been picked up I email all the other enquirers and let them know the item has now been taken, (unless there are absolutely loads of replies!), just so they know and are not left wondering what's happening, and I also submit a 'taken' post. I do know not everyone does this though- it may explain why you've responded to a few and then heard nothing!0 -
I use freecycle, and I always immediately exclude people who don't say "please", or people who reply over and over and over again and want anything and everything. I also don't like textspeak or people who ask me to ring their mobile to arrange collection. And if I've offered a selection of various items, I don't like to receive emails that say, "I'll take the lot".
And I HATE sob stories.
I tend to wait till I've a few responses and choose the one I "like" the most.
But then, I'm probably a bit harsh.0 -

Thoroughly agree! Pick and choose....it's still your property until you hand it over. You control who has it and who does not.
Why should you even consider someone who is either rude or lazy in their messages.....what on earth could they be like in real life!!** Freebies and money saved with the help of you all? - Don't know ....lost count! **** Stay Safe **0
