Hello,
I've got a .avi file but when I play it in Media Player it just plays the sound. Media Player doesn't try to download the codec like normal - it just plays the audio.
I've visited the microsoft website to try and find an answer but can't
Any ideas, techies?
Cheers,

Try this codec pack.
http://www.codecpack.com/
Personnaly I would ditch wmp, its utter rubbish.
Zoom player, media player classic or vlc player are good player vlc player doenst rrquire codecs. Some do a search on google for the names and you will find the links.0 -
If the codec pack doesn't have the right codec, you can use this util to identify the codec used, then google and download the correct codec.
http://avicodec.duby.info/
or this (look for the four character compression code)
http://files.divx-digest.com/nicky/avinfo_1.2a.zip
Some fourcc (compression) codes here:
http://www.fourcc.org/codecs.php
http://www.codecwizard.com/fourcc_code.phpEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
or completely remove all codecs and mediaplayer and install vlc to do it instead0

Thanks for that.
How do I find the 4 character compression code?
I tried this in real player too but it won't work - what is so different about this particular avi file that it won't play?spacey0 -
The programs mentioned in my post, or ToaoB's post show the fourcc code, just browse to the avi file in program, or right click the avi file in explorer, and open with avicodec etc..Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

Thanks guys it's now playing!
Just one more question now, I've installed GSpot and XVID but there are now two more menus under Start > All Programs. Can't I get rid of these? I notice is says "Uninstall xvid" but I guess if I do that I'll lose the codec. Can I get these off my Start Menu?

just right click the entries you dont want and choose delete. the stuff will still be installed.0 -
Most entries in the start menu are just shortcuts to a program, not the program itself. You can therefore delete a "short cut" without deleting the program itself. Just move your pointer over the entry you want to delete in the start menu, right click and select delete and left click.0

Thanks for that, should really have guessed myself
I've left GSpot in case I get any more troublesome files which won't play properly.
Thanks:beer:
