Flexicover Family Insurance

Options
A friend has just told me they bought the Flexicover Family Insurance with £150 excess, but when they needed to claim they were told it was £150 per person so have been asked to find £750 for a five person family before they can get any money back on a claim. Is this standard for family policies do you know? I have the same policy and it seems very misleading.

It is correct, here is the wording from their policy wording

    • Policy Excess: Under most sections of the policy, claims will be subject to an excess. This means that You
will be responsible for paying the first part of the claim up to the excess value per Insured Person for each
and every incident. A definition of Policy Excess is in the Meaning of Words

    http://www.flexicover.co.uk/Policy/FLEXI%203IN1PW%202009.pdf (Page 6)

Unfortunately you get what you pay for, to make their premiums cheaper they have imposed a £150 excess and also made it apply to each person on the policy.

There are policies that only apply the excess per incident so you would only pay the excess once irrespective of the size of the party. Their excesses would normally be around £50 to £60 as well. This makes their premiums higher so people tend to give them the swerve and go for the cheaper policies.

Ending up with a policy like they and you have is a consequence of buying a policy on price alone and not reading the policy.
  • I found my insurance after reading this website and didn't see any points about this excess issue here. Yes it is important to read the policy details but I think it would be a good idea if it was pointed out here as well in the travel insurance section. Maybe it is and I missed it?

It does mention it on the main site.
Annual worldwide family cover is cheaper, but there are huge variances in price (and cover levels) even here; while the Post Office charges £126 (£140 offline), Flexicover via MoneySupermarket is just £40.

I've added the bold emphasis though.

Other differences between the Post Office Policy and Flexicover apart from the price is lower are the Post Office is a better policy with a better Insurer and their excess if Nil or £50 per person however the Maximum total excess per incident they charge is £100 no matter how many people in your family.

Cheapest is not always best when you come to claim

That's certainly true, there was little point me buying the Flexicover insurance really because the excesses are so high and we didn't go abroad so we didn't need it for overseas healthcare. I am glad I learnt this BEFORE I needed to make a claim.
