Enamel bath question?

The bath in my house is an old enamel one and parts of the base are discoloured so it looks mucky(I assure you it is clean as a whistle)
I did it with a Polti steam cleaner when I moved in here which brought it up quite nicely,but was told it may damage the surface if I over do it.
Can anyone recommend what else to use please?
I have tried toothpaste and a scouring pad and elbow grease.
I have had Spirits of Salt recommended-but cannot find it anywhere-are they pulling my leg or does it exist and does it work??

You can still buy Spirits of Salt in some hardware stores albeit in a dilute form but I personally don't think it's the thing to use on an enamel bath (although I don't know what you can use), it's another name for sulphuric acid isn't it?
[Edit] I've just Googled it, spirit of salt is hydrochloric acid, I don't think that would do it much good either.I love my spell checker, it stops me making all sorts of stupid smelling mistakes. :doh:0 -

2 days, and i wouldnt push it with anything less. It would be a complete disaster if it started flaking. Bath still shinny and no flaking/cracking in the paint.go on, adopt a greyhound

How long ago did you do yours then handyman?

february, and its still fine. You get everything you need to do the job in the box, including wet and dry sandapergo on, adopt a greyhound
