Making a 'dolly dress' cake

DD will be 5 at the end of the week, and I am planning to make a 'dolly dress' cake - you know, the cake is the skirt, and I've taken the legs off a cheap dolly to plunge in the top
I have found a book that recommends I cook a medira style cake in a 2pt pudding basin.
It recommends I use 8oz batter (2oz fat, 2oz sugar, 2oz eggs, 2oz SR flour), but it does NOT recommend how long this will take to cook... or at what temperature
How long will this take to cook (ish!) ?
What oven temp? (I have an electric fan oven)
Will it cook in the centre? (my basin is pyrex)
Would you use a different recipe/quantity?
any comments gratefully received........

Hi Ang,
I made one of these years ago for my daughter. I cooked it in a pyrex bowl, about 180 degrees Centigrade, and just kept testing it with a skewer till it came out clean.
As for decorating it, cover the outside with a thin layer of buttercream, then halve marshmalows, (pink and white) and buikd up the skirt with one pink, one white, or one layer of each so it's stripey. That way, if you are not good with the old piping bag, it doesn't matter!
Looked lovely, and my daughter loved it.I Believe in saving money!!!:T

You just bought back a fab memory. My Mum made me one of these for my 6th birthday. She decorated the skirt with those iced flowers (the premade ones) and silver balls. She also took the legs of one my sisters Barbies to do it and she wasn't very happy!!
Hope your daughter likes the cake and has a great birthday.Sorting my life out to give a better life to my:heartsmil 2 gorgeous boys :heartsmil0 -
I have made several of these ( my mates worked out i could make cakes so i get lots to do now not only my kids)
Whether it is my bowl or my oven but if i cook a cake in a bowl then th e middle never cooks right and i end up with very crisp edges but the cakes always turn out good.
I tend to cover mine in royal icing have had to make a snow white one for my DD december last was lovely and a princess doll one as well since.
and just use a normal maderia recipe and just keep testing it. Good luck.

Thought you might like to see a piccy
This is the princess dress, has edible glitter all around the bottom pink balls, edible necklace and earrings and double layer dress with non edible netting under it too. went to town was beautiful though for my friends little girl i let her choose what she wanted it like and this is how it ended up she is very into princesses. shame the piccy does not do it justice is a photo of a photo done on my phone for you lol.this year i had to make the little girl a tinkerbell toadstool lol
Good luck would love to see yours when its doneStill TryingGrocery challenge July 2016

Thanks for all your replies!
As for the cooking times, it seems that I shall just keep testing until it seems about right!
As for decoration - thanks for the picci AngelRae, and for the idea about marshmallows HilStep...
...I shall wait to be inspired 'on the day'....
dd is diabetic, so I tend to decorate with coloured whipped cream rather than icing (which is a real no-no for her) - which usually makes for an anarchic, last minute, but fun and very tasty cake! (also means it has to be eaten on the day so doesn't hang about for ages calling to me !!) I was thinking pale pink cream, with strawberry slices around the bottom and a few arty swirls with an icing pen thing I have somewhere!
Here (hopefully) is a pic of last years 'butterfly' as you can see, using cream can limit the 'artistic possibilities' compared with icing, but dd hasn't compained yet - sure is tasty!!
I shall post a picci of the dolly dress after the event..... (assuming it's not a complete disaster!)
Any further advice / suggesions more than welcome...0 -
