A diesel being sluggish?? What car did you drive? Some diesels are quicker etc than there petrol equivalent!!

I agree, Diesels tend to feel a lot quicker in my experience. In a Diesel most of the torque is far lower down and therefore in real life use the power comes at much more usable points than Petrol.
  • I run a mini cooper diesel and on average I get 15 - 20 mpg more than the equivalent petrol model around town, and I get around 35 mpg more on the motorway.

35mpg more? either the petrol is being left in third gear constantly off the rev limiter or there is something wrong with it to have that differential.

Depends how you measure equivalence. Compare an average 2.0 diesel turbo against an average 2.0 petrol turbo and there won't be much comparison in performance.

Not that many, to be honest. A couple of Clios (one 2007, one around 1997), something in the late 90s that may have been a Corolla but my memory escapes me, a 2008 Corsa. Varying engine sizes. So I don't really have much experience of them but I haven't liked the ones I have driven. Just for things like overtaking and pulling out of a junction I've really preferred petrol cars as (in my limited experience) they've always seemed quicker.

Suppose it all depends on the car though really. I wouldn't say I'd never own a diesel but I'd have to give it a very good test drive first ;)
  • Diesels have the big advantage of maximum torque at low revs. The particular car I'm thinking of getting's little 1.4 litre oil burner gives you 160Nm at just 1750rpm. Useful for towing, but also very useful for urban driving, if and when you need to put your toe down to get out of trouble.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)
  • sitting in traffic at low speed/revs isnt any good for a modern diesel. google DPF.

True. It doesn't do my current petrol engine - or me - much good, either.

The solution is, when the divorce is settled, to get a home closer to work. I can then walk, leaving the car for longer, more enjoyable trips on evenings and weekends.

an older diesel engine would suit you down to the ground, they were designed for low revs, economy and torque they were not noted for thier acceleration but would run all day every day without missing a beat.

a small petrol engine is much more suited to sitting in traffic these days rather than a new diesel.

so when the divorce is dealt with trade in your diesel and buy yourself a sports car to enjoy your more enjoyable trips on evenings and weekends and enjoy driving again.

i am by no means against diesels, but they have thier place and a small city car isnt thier place.

I'm a recent convert to the wonders of Diesel. I'm saving £20 every time I fill up (roughly) compared to my previous petrol car. 50mpg versus 33mpg, though if I was comparing on a like for like driving style it would be 44mpg versus 33mpg. Still a saving on fuel.
    Happy chappy
