And at the end it says you have been awarded credit with the company. If you've entered it it will show up on a credit check.

I'm not sure if it gives you a black mark on your credit reference scoring. If you already had a bad credit score it probably wouldnt do you many favours.

It seems vaguely illegal to run a credit check within a competition without providing adequate warning

I was once told by the bank that everytime a credit check is run on you it reduces your credit rating by 1 point. Normally this is not a problem because these are restored after a month or so of having no checks credit problems, however if you have been having several credit checks in the same period of time then it can lead to you being refused credit because your points will have dropped too low and you will have to wait some time for them to build back up.

I found this out because I applied for a store card (to get discount) about 6 years ago at a time when I had just taken out my first mortgage, had my credit card limit increased, switched from a student to a 'normal' current account and taken out another store card (to get 10% discount). Apparently all of these things had involved credit checks and so had reduced my points for that month. I hadn't even realised that my credit had been checked for my credit card as it was just a normal thing by my bank to put up my credit card limit every year. Things like signing up to a new catalogue can also involve a credit check.

That said you would have to have had quite a lot going on in a month for this to be a problem for you. Also perhaps rules have changed now.

I seem to remember when we applied to change our bank account the problem seemed to be that we'd had no credit checks. Apparently not having any seems suspicious too, goodness knows why.
