in Credit cards
I stupidly signed up to an adult themed site about 6 months ago using my credit card. Surprise surprise, I never recieved any contact from the company, apart from a £10 direct debit that comes out every month. I contacted the company as best I could, (a webmaster email address) but never recieved a reply. My credit card company have said I can't just stop or cancel this direct debit without the consent of the other company and i need to contact them, except I cant!! Is there anyway of stopping this direct debit or will I be paying for this for the rest of my life!! I am trying to close my credit card account and they wont do this until the d/d has been removed.
Thanks

unfortunatly what you have is not a direct debit, so is not covered by the dd guarentees etc or help from your bank, what this is is a continous payment authority, which more info can be found here : http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/moneybox/2099270.stm
and suggsest that if the company cant be contacted set up a dispute with your credit cardMFW#105 - 2015 Overpaid £8095 / 2016 Overpaid £6983.24 / 2017 Overpaid £3583.12 / 2018 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2019 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2020 Overpaid £2583.12/ 2021 overpaid £1506.82 /2022 Overpaid £2975.28 / 2023 Overpaid £2677.30 / 2024 Overpaid £2173.61 Total OP since mortgage started in 2015 = £37,286.86 2025 MFW target £1700, payments to date at April 2025 - £1712.07..0 -

As said before, what you have is not a direct debit as it's not set up on a bank account. You have a continuous payment authority.
What you need to do is to write to your credit card company and say that you've been unable to contact the company and can they please pass on your cancellation request. They will have the details of the website's bank on their system and can fax your letter to them who will in turn pass it to their merchant (the website who have your credit card details).
Address your letter to the Disputes Department.
Once you have done that, your credit card company can re-claim any further debits made after they've faxed your letter. That is assuming you've not signed up for a contract of a certain period.
Send the letter ASAP, make sure you sign it and keep a copy.
Hope this helps.0 -
