1,000 Posts Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
. I would say that many of us on this site who cook real food do so because our financial situations forced us to look long and hard at where our limited incomes go.

My financial situation has absolutely nothing to do with why I cook my family real food. It wouldn't matter how much or little money I had, I would always and have always cooked from scratch with raw ingredients. Saving money is a bonus of this way of life and I have never considered for one minute buying ready meals.

I am similar to thriftlady. I cook from scratch with raw ingredients because I refuse to put processed chemical laden ready meals into my system. I certainly refuse to give them to my children. The fact it is cheaper is obviously a bonus.

I missed the programme and hope its repeated as I want to see it.

There is a signed version of the programme scheduled for 1.25am - 2.25am Saturday 15th August. This is a repeat of the first programme in the series.

  • I wonder if the whole series is all families? Would be good to see an episode for singles as I bet they make up the biggest percentage of ready meal buyers. I guess the advice would be similar though - cook in bulk, freeze in meal portions, shop with a list yadda yadda yadda...

we also never ever eat rubbish in our house. Never eat ready meals. It takes no time to put a very decent meal together from scratch. Here`s one: salmon and 4 veg in the steamer and here is another; a good thick veg soup with pulses and full of lovely veg plus a chunk of crusty hm bread. I am not talking so called gourmet food but honest to goodness good food. Cooking to keep your family healthy is an act of love and nothing whatsoever to do with finances

I cook from scratch, my fridge, freezer, and store cupboards are full, you will not find a ready meal any where in site. My youngest dd is always moaning that there is "no food in this house" When i say look the cupboards are full she says but thats not proper food:confused: .She is not living at home she is living with friends who live on junk, that just take something out of the freezer and pop it in the microwave/oven. But when she dose eat at ours she dose admit that my cooking is great.:D
By the way I thought the program was good,I did like that they had other people on there giving tips, I freeze all my ends of cheese for putting in soups anyway, mind you i freeze everything, bread crumbs, left over wine, cooked jacket spuds, it would be nice to see if they revisit the family to see if they are still managing.

I wonder what the `bedrock receipe` will be next week?

I too have a fussey 9 year old boy, he does not like mince, and have stopped trying to make him eat it as he is pysically sick over the dinner table if I put it any where near him! Sure it is more mind over matter as my cooking is not that bad. He like to be able to `see` his food and eats 1 thing at once!

    Any ideas?

I was also thinking this..they should do either a single person or couple without kids:D It was when dh and I were just two that we spent a fortune on quick meals, take-aways and eating out!!!

I have watched this again since...and I know people have criticised the parents for not being stricter with the 9yr old, but this is going to be a big change for him...my kids (mostly) eat what I put in front of them, except if it's too spicy, but I have ALWAYS been strict on them eating what they are given I can imagine if I had been feeding them whatever they want for years and suddenly change there would be battles!! I think they will do well to just take baby steps and introduce new dishes slowly.

I usually cook family favourites, but then add a new one in every now and then...if it is a success then it becomes more regular, if not then depending on how simple/cheap/healthy it is it will either be completely boycotted or just made now and again.

Also wanted to add - did they make three meals out of 1kg of mince.....I do the same out of a 500g bag!!!

Hi there, I watched the programme last night on i-player because i saw the thread and thought I would see for myself. I thought it was really good.

Anyway, I thought the idea of a 'bedrock' recipe is a very good one and I'll be putting this to good use. I'm not sure I would serve all three meals in a week though, I'll be more likely to freeze the two extra portions for use the following week.

I thought the plan for this particular family (The English family) was realistic for them. There were still some convenient foods (eg frozen puff pastry) so it wasn't all Mrs Beeton, which would have been too much for them, and for me come to think of it! I might even try the macaroni cheese recipe too - it looked really yummy!

I'll put this on series record now.

Just one more thing, is Allegra Jamie Oliver's twin sister?
