From gritty cop to cowboy and director, Clint Eastwood has been a central Hollywood figure for the past four decades, and we are giving away a box set containing eight of his best movies, released on Monday 11 June.
He is the man with no name. He is one of the finest American actors of the past four decades, making his name as a tough guy, a cowboy, a gritty cop and much, much more. And he’s also a director in his own right, earning scores of award nominations and a clutch of outright wins for his films.
The eight films on offer in Clint Eastwood - The Collection include his first six directorial outings and some of his best films:
The Eiger Sanction
Eastwood plays an assassin tempted out of retirement for one last hit… but this one is up one of the world’s deadliest mountains…
The Beguiled
Directed by long-time Eastwood collaborator Don Siegel (Dirty Harry), this drama set in the time of the American Civil War, sees Clint playing a soldier who, after injury, is looked after by a headmistress and her female students.
Play Misty For Me
Still one of Eastwood’s finest roles, as he plays the DJ who is hounded by a fan who won’t accept that their fling was just a one night stand. And her stalking soon takes a sinister turn… It also marked his directorial debut.
Joe Kidd
Eastwood returned to the Wild West that had made his name in this 1972 Western film in which he plays a hard-drinking gunslinger caught between two warring factions.
High Plains Drifter
His sophomore outing as a director, again has Eastwood as a cowboy, this time echoing his career-forming roles as the Man With No Name. A stranger rolls into a small town and trouble follows his arrival…
Coogan’s Bluff
Eastwood’s first starring role under the guidance of director Don Siegel, this took him out of the Wild West and into New York, as an Arizona lawman tracks down an escaped con in the Big Apple.
Breezy
The only film in the box set not to star Eastwood, Breezy instead finds him firmly ensconced in the director’s chair, as he oversees this drama starring William Holden and Kay Lenz. Two Mules For Sister Sara
A Western that pits Eastwood, as a gun for hire, not only against assorted baddies, but also against a nun he rescues and escorts, played spunkily by Shirley Maclaine. Ennio Morricone provides the score for Clint’s first post-spaghetti Western.
Question: When was Clint Eastwood born?
Answer: 1930
