Options
Hi! I bought my other half a leather bag(on ebay) and it really smells. It is a fantastic bag and my other is using it as his work bag.He stunk out his office floor yesterday. So,would anybody know what I can use to destink a leather bag? Would be grateful for any help.
I think the smell is from something the leather was treated with.Bit dungy smelling and very strong!Thank you.

You might be able to use one of the ideas in this thread:-

Maybe some sort of scented essential oil, a bit like when people always seemed to treat biker jackets with petulia (SP) oil

If you buy a charcoal filter for a cooker hood and put it in a sealed plastic bag with the leather bag the filter should absorb the smell. No idea how long you'll have to do it for, just a process of trial and error I'm afraid.

I've done it successfully with books that smelt of cigarette smoke and a pair of leather shoes that smelt damp.
  • I've found a very useful trick is to buy a bar of saddle soap (available from anywhere that sells equestrian goods and most pet shops will order it in for you).

It's a bar of hard 'soap' used to clean saddles and bridles for horses, but it will clean anything made of leather included bags, sofas, shoes etc.

You can get it in liquid form as well so follow the instructions for whichever one you buy.

It's very inexpensive and will last to clean even the biggest sofa many times.

Because it's designed for equestrian use, it will clean any odour out of the leather, and leave it more supple and rejuvenated. The most important thing to remember is to make sure you rub the leather properly with a soft cloth as the soap will bring ingrained dirt out of the leather and if you don't rub properly when the leather dries the ingrained dirt will show up as white soap scum over the leather and you will need to clean again.

This is ONLY suitable for real leather.

Just thought I'd leave this here as I've recently had a similar problem and was searching the internet for a more 'up to date' way to remove the smell from a leather bag. But it seems that even after hundreds of years you still can't beat elbow grease and soap!!

I bought some motorbike leathers off Ebay but forgot to check they were from a non-smoking household. They absolutely stank, they went straight into a black binbag and I chucked nearly a whole tub of bicarbonate of soda in with it. A few days later, I hung them out on the line in the sun for the majority of the day. Did the job, no more musty smoke smell :)
