Hello all
Yes, yes, I know it's early! However, my family are coming over for Christmas this year from Australia and I'm trying to seek out a place to spend Christmas... they've asked for somewhere that you can almost 'guarantee snow' ! plus lovely Christmas markets and a really good atmosphere - somewhere in Europe.
I thought maybe Vienna, Austria or Switzerland - however, not been to any at Christmas time.
Have done a bit of searching online and there are a lot that offer this - however, hard to know where to choose..can anyone offer advice / tips from personal experience?
Thanks!

I would suggest southern Germany, for the Alps and the snow. Maybe Garmisch-Partenkirchen, with the Zugspitze mountain and railway which is well worth it, and close to Munich with its Christmas markets? It's also not too far from proabably the best big city market at Nuremburg. Lots of the smaller towns will have their own, less commercial markets. The atmosphere is wonderful - so Christmassy. I can highly recommend a visit to any European christmas market. Bear in mind that most of the markets close a few days before Christmas if you are planning to be there at Christmas itself. Have a look at the following website for some ideas about the markets and the dates:

Salzburg.
I've been a few times at Christmas now and even though I've spent over a month in total there, I still haven't seen everything the city and area has to offer. Also, I've always booked independently and have beat the brochure prices everytime.
I've written quite a bit on the subject in these threads if you're interested...
