Munich and Salzburg are cheap to fly to.

Easyjet fly from Gatwick to Salzburg from 13th December onwards, and from Stansted to Munich.
Looking at the prices, I'd be very tempted to get a cheap flight out to Munich for £25-30 and saty a night or two there, then get the train through the Black Forest to Salzburg for a couple of nights and fly back from there for £26.
I've done that trip myself. It's ridiculously easy and you get the best of both worlds.

Try Manchester! Last year their Christmas markets were lovely, the bonus is the shopping in the city centre is great (better than Oxford Street and I speak as a Londoner) and the choice of dining places fantastic. Wander down Oxford Road past the university and infirmary, and you will find an authentic Lidl selling stollen, gluhwein and other such Christmas treats that the Germans do so well...

Well it is in Europe and if you get a Virgin London-Manchester £1 ticket also v. cheap to get to!

Belfast usually has a nice Christmas market in the grounds of the city hall every year. There are traders from all over the world at it.

We went to Salzburg,Austria last year using cheap Ryanair flights from Stansted. Great market. Nearby outdoor skating rink, well peserved fortress above the town, Grottos, St Nicholas gives out sweets around the market. Horse and carriage rides around the city for about £25 (for 4). Carol singing, sledge rides after dark, snowing. People stand outside at tables drinking christmas punch. The Cathedral is old and lovely. Very easy and cheap to get to from airport. You just get the bus to the train terminal and cahnge onto a b us going to ratause I think it was called. Ask the driver what the stop is called or you will just see lots of people getting off at the stop.

  • Last year we went to Krakow. Not a very big market as markets go but in an absolutely wonderful setting. It's a beautiful compact city and accomodation in winter is at it's lowest price. There were 6 of us (golden girls) and we all loved it. This year we are flying to Dusseldorf, with a choice of the markets there or a short train ride to the markets of Cologne and Essen.

Trier (oldest city in Germany, very pretty) - fly to Frankfurt Hahn with Ryanair. 40 mins from airport with hire car.
