A short Christmassy break Nov/Dec 2008

Hello all,
I know it's early yet, but my boyfriend and I are looking at a 3 or 4 night trip to New York in late November/early December, but I've been doing a little bit of research and I can't find any flights cheaper than £400 each (from Manchester/Edinburgh) which is quite a bit more than I've seen advertised previously and more than we really want to pay.
So, we're starting to think of some possible alternatives. The attraction of NY at that time of year was the shopping and the Christmassy-ness, so we were thinking maybe Christmas markets in Prague/Vienna. Or possibly Lapland, but I think that'll be too expensive too to be honest.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a short break which will get us in the Christmas spirit?
Thanks!

I got your flights around the £260 mark flying 27th Nov - 1st Dec with Northwest.
If that is still too much then as has already been said Germany is lovelly at Christmas, the smell of mulled wine, the lights and sounds of children singing as you wander round the snow capped wooden markets0 -

It is actually getting a bit late for your German Christmas market flights, they are getting expensive for peak times.
They are great and much cheaper than NYC.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0 -
Thanks for your suggestions, I was thinking about Germany (especially as I've never been before) but wasn't sure where so I'll look into Cologne.
Sturll - those £260 flights you mentioned - seems like a bargain, which UK airport were you looking at? I had a little look from Manchester, Edinburgh and Gatwick and the cheapest I could find was £315. Still not bad but I'd obviously rather get them for £200-and-something if possible!!Weightloss: 14.5/65lb0 -
