"The type of the file system is FAT32.
One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but....etc etc
Windows will now check the disk
Windows is verifying files and folders......
Windows replaced bad clusters in file....." etc
I start laptop up and each time get this message. Then it goes to the F8,F12 black screen bit (as you can see I'm a bit of a techy boffin;) ); next windows attempts to start up unsuccessfully and it goes back to the light blue disk checking screen. After going through this loop around 5 or 6 times it eventually settles at the windows icons screen. I then log-on to the internet quickly enough and may be on-line for up to 2 hours and then without warning I get a blank screen and have to simply turn the machine off and start again!
Have run Ad Aware (nothing showed up), AVG (again nothing) and have windows firewall running.
Any suggestions please?

Sounds like your HDD is failing. Is S.M.A.R.T enabled at all? This will tell you if the HDD is failing or not. You might be able to set this up in your system bios. Boot up, hit the appropriate key (f2 or something similar) when prompted to go into cmos then find the hard disk options and enable SMART.0
