Help my friend live on £1 a day?

No, I'm not saying 'my friend' because I'm too embarrassed. :p I'm at Bangor uni at the moment, and a good friend of mine is apparently in dire straits after his rent suddenly increased. For the next few weeks, he'll have about £1 a day...he's planning on spending it on Value Pizza!

So, anyway. Since I'm worried about him eating properly (I've invited him over for a chicken dinner tonight - hooray M+S offers!), I could use some tips. I'm pretty good with recipes - mainly I just need to know what's cheap and tastes okay. Food that's quick for him to prepare would be good too.

The nearest supermarkets without driving are Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl and Iceland...where can I get the cheapest meat? What's the best way to use tinned veg in a recipe? What's the cheapest way to make a curry?

Thanks in advance, everyone. :D

  • Aldi has fresh veg on offer this month for 39p per pack - carrots/ pots brocolli etc that could be ok for veg wise for a veggie curry with a jar of sauce if cooking isnt a big option
It could last a least a couple of days :-) has he a freezer
I am not the best with ideas so someone will be able to help tou better than me
  • What about veggie stews, soups etc. If he has a freezer he can make a massive batch and portion freeze

Does he have any ingredients in the store cupboard?

He might find he can get free 'unusual' cuts of meat at the butchers

He might also get freebies at the end of the day - particularly Saturday when they have to get rid of stuff

Also have a look at the making the most from supermarket shopping article - mentions when best to visit the supermarkets to get the discounts

Another trick would be to visit local indian / chinese etc stores and buy the biggest bag of rice he can. You can then add sauces / tuna / veg etc to them to bulk them out - my cousin seems to live on this

Hope these might help, good luck!
One day everything I earn will be mine and not the banks... ::rotfl:

Are there any societies he can join ? Might get a free lunch or cheese n wine (eat lots of cheese and biccies and less wine lol).
Otherwise, whoopsie section, Aldi/Lidl for bread etc, batch cooking pasta, batch cooking a curry- use thighs or reduced meat cuts and a cheap Sauce. Could he offer to cook for some friends and then get a free meal for doing it ?

  • Was his landlord allowed to increase his rent? It's worth checking that out.

You mean, the book? Do you want to sell it once you finish it (or loan it against payment of postage)? Please let me know as I am interested. Thank you!
