Eating on the cheap - is it possible?

Hi everybody, I work in neighbourhood renewal as Chair of a local group, but I'm also the editor of the groups newsletter. Our area is classified as deprived with a high number of unemployed / single parent families and the like and I was thinking of running a series of articles in the newsletter about how to eat healthily on the cheap. Can anyone recommend a good source of such info? Or how about your own suggestions?
What about creating meals for two for just £1 - is it possible?
Any help much appreciated.

Ditto Rachie B! In fact, if the board guide sees this I'd suggest they move it - OS is full of the most creative, inspired people you'll ever find in one place - man, they'd probably write your newsletter for you!0 -
Don't see the point anymore in offering advice to people who only want to be agreed with...0 -

Have a look at some of the Meal Plan threads on the Old Style board for inspiration.
Here are a few for inspiration:
THIS ONE was referred to in Martin's Old Style book.

Perfectly possible to eat within the budget you specify, BUT you can either do it the savvy "quality food" route that involves careful budgeting/shopping/cooking from scratch, and involves foods that many on a low budget wouldn't consider (eg a rumage for the cheap stuff on the market, pulses that you cook from scratch yourself, or reallycheap cuts of meat that need long cooking ) OR you can take the basic supermarket route using say value beans and value white bread (very cheap and OK for the occ meal in a balanced diet but not all the time) or the very cheap ready meals from say, farmfoods, which I daresay have little food bvalue, but fill the tummy...
IMHO people who have to live on a very low budget often don't have the skills to cook basic foods from scratch and weigh up what their diet needs to balance, rather than just not be hungry. Don't know how the skills gap can be filled thoughReciepes are good, but cooking demos and tasting parties would be even better- why would you cook lentild for your kids, if you don't even know that you might like to eat them?

I think it probably was a sweeping generalisation from the person who posted it, as of course there are different reasons for low income, and backgrounds.
But I do think that some people do have a terrible lack of knowledge, low in come or not, of cooking.
I consider myself very poor in the cooking skills, and takes a huge amount of effort from myself to come up with ideas. I didn't receive any cooking skills at school and my mother would cook anything from a freezer or a can, so I have had to really push myself to be imaginative, and tend to reach for cook books which have quick and simple suggestions.
So I would suggest that the original poster should do a mixture of recipes, so that it can suit all cooking skills.0 -
Does anyone have any suggestions? I quite like the idea of cooking up mince then freezing it so it can be thawed and used to make other meals such as Bolognese or Shepherds Pie. Any recipes for making your own sauces that can be frozen? I quite like bolognese/mild curry/shepherds pie sauces. Any other suggestions/recipes?0
